i I . WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 1923 WE WIRIETEE 15 RS BU JE Howard W. Fenton Type of "Self-Made" Man A week ago Glencoe citizens were seen to bulge with pardonable pride over the fact that their fellow towns- man, James Simpson, has achieved the great distinction of being elected president of Marshall Field and com- pany. This week it was Winnetka's turn to display some pride in view of the fact that citizen Howard W. Fenton was elected president of the Harris Trust and Savings Bank. The story of the rise of Mr. Fenton from filing clerk at $6 a week to presi- dent of one of the most important banking houses in the midle west, bears a singular similarity to the re- markable business career of James Simpson. Mr. Fenton at the age of 17 years, became a filing clerk with the Harris Trust and Savings Bank, then N. W. Harris and company. He advanced steadily through the various depart- ments of the institution to places of increasing responsibility until this week the board of directors selected him as president. Mr. Fenton was appointed Red Cross director for the Central district during the war, being next in rank to the late Henry Davison, national chairman. He is known among bank employes for the profit sharing plan he intro- duced in 1916 and for the personal interest he has taken in every em- ploye in the bank. It still houses Flynn, but not the market. For Theo- dore Flynn has converted his business into a first class restaurant and deli catessen store. Flynn opened up his new establish- ment late last month. Already he is planning extensive improvements which will considerably enlarge the place. The improvements, an addition of six attractive booths as permanent fixtures, will be installed within the next two weeks, says Mr. Flynn. HEAR OF NEW CHURCH AT CONG'L BANQUET Thursday night comes the Annual Parish Dinner of the Winnetka Con- gregational church, in the gymnasium of Community House. Tickets are al- ready for sale at the office of Com- munity House and reservations must be made before January 15. As usual, the dinner is in the efficient care of the Woman's society. Preceding the dinner music will be rendered in the church, and following it will come the usual interesting re- ports of the church's progress, but the great emphasis of the meeting will be upon the new church building. Full information will be given of the reasons which moved the church to its recent vote to build an entirely new structure. A careful statement will be presented as to the next problems upon which the whole parish must make up its mind. The meeting will close with the showing of lantern slides of different types of church ar- chitecture and their explanation by the Rev. Von Ogden Vogt of Chicago, in order that the parish may begin at once intelligently to think ahead to- ward the definite consummation of this great project.
