Public School Girls Vie for Basketball Positions More than 150 children of the Win- petka public schools are contesting for places on the school basketball teams whigh are being drilled 'by Harry P. Clark. This number includes a great many girls who will later com- pose the girls' teams. All of the 150 children are being «taught the fundamentals of the cage © sport. As soon as the majority have progressed enough the best will be sriicwed to form heavy and lightweight promos © teams. When the teams have picked up enough knowledge 'of the sport it is probable that tournaments will be held to determine the championship in both the boys' and the girls' divi- sion. Outside games may be scheduled with the North Shore Country Day school, if present plans materialize. Winnetka Woman's Club The regular meeting of the Woman's club was held January 11, Mrs. Wall- ing announced the next regular meet- ing to be held January 25, in charge of the Art and Literature committee. Mr. Percy B. Eckhart will give a lect- ure illustrated with slides on "Sicily and "'Round About the Mediterran- ean." Miss Cawin, a member of the Na- tional child labor committee made a most convincing argument in favor of the child Labor Amendment to the Federal Constitution. The first law in regard to child labor was found to be unconstitutional and the second law suffered the same fate. Since last May child labor has been unprotected by federal law. At the outbreak of the war illiteracy tests showed that of those entering the service one out of every four could not read. Where illiteracy is greatest there is where cihld labor is exploited. The United States is a backward nation, in regard to this question, ranking with China, Japan and India. Every club member is urged to bom- bard our senators and representatives in Washington with letters in favor of this amendment. Mrs. Crushman introduced Mrs. Al- fred J. Benson, ex-secretary of the Vocational Society for Shut-Ins. This society was started in about three years ago for ex-service men. At first it was merely ocupational therapy but the idea grew and instructors were sent into the homes to teach the shut-ins who had some knowledge of needlework or arts and crafts to pro- duce salable articles. The products of these handicapped persons have been placed on sale at a shop at 677 North Michigan avenue. The work is now two-thirds self-supporting and many unfortunate ones who have hitherto been consumers and burdens on society, have become producers and have had given them a new lease on life. Many individual instances were related by Mrs. Benson showing the great good which is being done. The following members served tea: Mrs. George W. Gordon, Mrs. John Olmstead, Mrs. L. Harry Waidner and Mrs. R. Jordan Wilson.
