WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 1923 TELS LS WHIT WF MISSED OR ESCIPE Winnetka Came Near Being Seat of Northwestern Uni- versity, History Shows LAND TOO COSTLY Also; e Missed Being Camp-Meeting Grounds By P. B. KAY If the price of land had not been so high, Winnetka might have become the site of Northwestern university. Winnetka was a satisfactory loca- tion, but to quote the words of Or- rington Lunt, "We found the site could not be bought at any such price as we could afford, being owned by several parties." The subsequent story of the search for a suitable site might be told, even though a digression. How the com- mittee was on the verge of buying land at Jefferson, had in fact got an option on certain farms over there. How Lunt, "the Christophero Colom- bo of these classic shades," at the last moment turned the tide in favor of Evanston, away from Jefferson and the County poor house. Read the account in Miss Willard's story of Evanston. Sought Camp-Meeting Site Again, Winnetka might have been a camp-meeting ground. If Elder Boring, a leader of influence in the Methodist church of Civil war days, had come into the Chicago district a year or two earlier Winnetka doubtless would have been chosen as a camp ground. Elder Boring liked Winnetka. "I liked Winnetka, and I wanted the camp-meeting located there--on the lake shore at Winnetka; that was my personal preference." But, before his coming the people of the district had been called to as- semble at Des Plaines. At the meet- ing they voted for Des Plaines So it was decided that Winnetka should not be a Methodist camp-meeting ground. The fervent words uttered by Fran- ces E. Willard in praise of Des Plaines might have been directed to- ward Winnetka: "Old time Evanstonians were de- voted to Des Plaines. We used to go over to that blessed gospel camp- ground in big wagons, packed with household goods and good househoid- ers, singing hymns on the way. Holi- ness seemed easy as we watched the stars above the sheltering trees." But, regret is vain. If she had become the chosen spot of university and camp-meeting Win- netka would have become classic like Evanston and sanctified like Des Plaines. But, depending on neither of these accidental strokes of fortune, she has become the "Community that does things." HEAR NOTED RABBI Dr. Abraham Hirschberg, of Tem- ple Sholem, Chicago, will address the members of the North Shore Branch Sinai Congregation at the Hubbard Woods school, Wednesday evening, January 10. The meeting begins promptly at 8:30 o'clock. BOYS AT ARDEN SHORE GRATEFUL FOR GIFTS The boys at the Arden Shore Camp wish to thank the good friend who sent them a radiopticon for Christ- mas. No name accompanied the gift, so it cannot be directly acknowledgeq, but the giver may feel sure that it is greatly appreciated and is the source of much entertainment during the long winter evenings. Many other beautiful and useful gifts were received at Christmas time and, if personal thanks have in any case failed to be returned, it is not through lack of appreciation but be- cause name and address were not clearly given or were lost in transit. The boys are most grateful for every- thing that has been done for them and more than happly over the friend- ly spirit and personal interest shown in their welfare. There are forty boys at the camp, all = rapidly gaining health and strength. As soon as one goes "over the top" and is sent home to get a job and help support his family, another little fellow takes his place and the good work goes on. Masonic Lodge to Install Davies as Chaplain Tuesday Special installation ceremonies will be conducted by the Winnetka Mason- ic lodge Tuesday evening, January 9, when Dr. J. W. F. Davies, associate pastor of the Winnetka Congregation- al church, and director of Community House, will be formally inducted into the office of chaplain. Dr. Davies, because of illness, was unable to be present at the annual in- stallation ceremonies of the lodge on December 19.
