4 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1923 . DIPHTHERIA DEATHS, MYTH--SCHNEIDER Despite the fact that Health Com- missioner Schneider last week issued a formal denial that Winnetka was in the throes of an epidemic of diph- theria, the rumors still persist. Late this week came the report to the offices of the Winnetka Talk that three citizens of the village died at the Evanston hospital this week after being ill but a few days with diph- theria. The facts are these, Health Com- missioner Schneider explains: Ed- ward Seigel, Charles Siebold, Harry Henderson, Elizabeth Payne and John Krieter are recorded at the health department as suffering with diphtheria, Four are at the IIvans- ton hospital and in no danger. Miss Payne, a teacher in the public schools, is at her home in Highland Park and doing nicely. Above cases comprise the total number recorded this month. Two cases developed during the first week in the month, two were reported in the week of January 14 and one during this week. There is no evi- dence at this time of even the danger of an epidemic of diphtheria or of other serious contagion, Commissioner Schneider reports. One case of scarlet fever, that of little Jean Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Miller, Jr., was reported this month. There are also a scatter- ing of whooping cough and a few cases of chicken pox in the village. McNeal's Smile Was a Frown Compared to That of Meleney H. Edwin McNeal, 925 Elm street, smiled with pardonable pride a few weeks ago when the doctor said "it's a bouncing girl." His smile, and facts appertaining thereto, was duly recorded in a recent issue of the Talk. "But," says R. C. Meleney, north shore agent for Hart and Crouse, Royal Boiler manufacturers, "this here now McNeal person has nothing or. me. The doctor announced a bounc- ing boy on January 7, thereby broaden- ing the smile that came with our first child. broadened when the second ar rived and, as you note, has now ex- panded into an ear-to-ear indicator of sheer delight." Lincoln Avenue Widening Proposed by Petitioners A petition has been received by the Winnetka Board of Local Improve- ments for the widening of the pave- ment on Lincoln a2venue in the busi- ness district from its southern end at intersection of Elm street, north to the limits of the "C" Commercial dis- trict. It is learned that the council is con- sidering the possibility of extending the widening as far as Community House in order to provide additional parking space on Lincoln avenue.
