A children's concert will be giv- en at the same auditorium at 4 o'clock in the afternoon of that day. Arthur Grandquist. pianist. who is to be soloist at the concert. returns to the concert stage after an interval of several years devoted almost exclus- ively to teaching. During this period of retirement his services as soloist have been so insistently demanded that he has decided to limit his teach- ing engagements in order to resume concert work Mr. Granquist is a resident of 'Wil- mette and is well known in many parts of the country where he has successfully appeared as soloist and in ensemble, eliciting the enthusias- tic comment alike of critics and audi- ences. Wagner First Highway Built Is Still Carrying Traffic It is not generally known that the first highway of any durability was constructed by Appius Claudius in 311 B. C. This ancient highway was laid out between Rome and Capua being restained as a military road. It still exists and carries traffic. The Appian Way, as it was called, was constructed of stone and mortar to a depth of about four feet. It was surfaced with stone slabs and a kind of gravel. Labor of course, was very cheap in those days, while slaves could haul materials tremendous dist- ances at little or no cost. Freshman Girl Swim Champ At New Trier High School Olive Dennis and Verna Ravenscroft, both freshmen, took first and second places respectively in a swimming meet for girls held in th New Trier tank a week ago Friday. Alice King, a junior, took third position. Twenty of New Trier's competed in this meet. Events in the plunge, crawl, breast stroke, back stroke, and forty-yard swim were on the program. Olive Dennis took first place in three of these, thereby laying claim to the title of New Trier's best girl swimmer, and Verna Ravenscroft took the second greatest number of points. mermaids Vagabonds Conduct Dances At the Odd Fellows Hall The Vagabond Dance orchestra is now conducting the Saturday night dances at Odd Fellows hall, Wilmette, it was an- nounced this week. Eddie Shaer. is one-half of the former Tu-Ed combi- is assisting the Vagabonds. Vagabond dances at Odd Fellows hall have been singularly successful this sea- son.
