Von SECOND GRADE PUPILS SCORE HIT WITH DRAMA Second grade pupils of the Horace Mann public school, Miss Luella Sch- wartz, teacher, gave an excellent Ara- bian program in the Assembly room of the school Wednesday morning of this week. The play, "The Merchants and the Camel," was the outcome of a study of Arabia and was costumed and partici- pated in the entire class. The children were spontaneous and en- thusiastic in their playing, and, young as they were, acted as their own stage managers and made their own announce- ments. The play is one of a series being worked out by Miss Douglass Whitehead, supervisor in dramatics in the public schools, and the teachers in the different schools of the village. An attempt is being made to use the geographical, his- torical and other social studies of the children as a ground work for the plays, and to weave in the art, music and dances of the countries studied. The pupils of Soren Ostergaard, prin- cipal of Horace Mann school and of Miss Cleveland, teacher of the fifth grade at that school, have already given a number of plays based on American history and invention, and others are in course of preparation.
