WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 1923 WED 50 YEARS; SCORES AT FETE (Continued from Page 2.) After the guests has assembled in the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Norton entered the reception room to the strains of Lohengrin's "Weddings March," preceded by two little pages, their nephews, 4- year Robert Waldo Putnam, and their grandnephew, 6-year old Ernest Put- nam Clark, Jr. Their son from the east, Clifford Norton, was master-of-cere- monies. A short address was delivered by Rev. James Austin' Richards of the Winnetka Congregational church, con- gratulating Mr. and Mrs. Norton on their fifty years of happily married life and sincerely wishing them many more. Dr. J. W. F. Davies, associate pastor of the Winnetka Congregational church, then offered a prayer. A second delight- ful musical program was provided in the evening by Mr. and Mrs. I. Harrison Putnam homestead at Northbridge. Mrs. Caroline Smith, who dressed the bride, was present Saturday. Not long after- ward Mr. Norton built the new Trinity church, Boston, on the charred ruins of the old edifice for Philips Brooks, its rector, staying for some time after its completion as an usher. Philips Brooks was very particular in desiring silence when he was speaking from the pulpit so that the slamming of the church doors greatly annoyed him. At his sug- gestion, Mr. Norton designed the first door-closer, to check the doors and close it quietly. Today, about forty years since then, the Norton Door-Closer company owns a large new factory on Western avenue, Chicago, up-to-date in the smallest details, into which the busi- ness moved less than a year ago. It was about twelve years ago that the Nortons moved to Winnetka, selecting the site which their house now occupies because the Oak street hill reminded them of hilly New England. Mr. Norton is very much interested in gardening, and for that reason their grounds at the corner of Willow and Walnut streets are noted for beauty. Read the Want Ads their Frint George Purchases M.
