PUBLIC SERVICE READY FOR DEMAND FOR GAS Public Service Companys Gas works near Niles include the instal- lation, now practically under way, of an economizer--a device which though not exactly an innovation in a gas generating plant is neverthe- less by no means in common use. Its function is to save waste heat and this returned to the boilers for useful work naturally results in a lessening of coal consumption. At the Niles plant also plans are being completed providing for three new 300 h. p. boil- ers provided with Cox stokers. The station is called on to supply a heavy summer demand. Such a condi- tion at that season is rather un- usual in the experience of most gas making enterprises. As to Niles, it furnishes gas to Wilmette and Evans- ton and to a group of towns and a territory threaded together by good roads with many hotels and restau- rants patronized by a great army of automobilists in fine weather. The Western Gas Construction company of Fort Wayne, Ind., is now busily engaged at the Company's gas works at Ottawa in the construction of two steel purifiers 13 feet diameter by 12 feet deep, with cover hoist and hinged side cleaning doors. The boxes will have a capacity of 1,100 bushels of oxide each and the flow of gas through the oxide will be regulated | by a duplex reversing valve which en- ables a complete reversal of the di- rection of flow. The new boxes will be placed out- side in the yard, as they are so con- structed that housing is unnecessary. For a year past many municipalities have been engaged in carrying out va- rious improvements such as paving, sewer construction and extensions of existing systems. The fact has in- volved on the Gas Department and for that matter the Electric Construction Department of the Public Service Company an unusual amount of work. In the case of the Gas Department it has been called on to move mains that altogether express mileage.
