: / J J vv WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 26, 1923 5 BLAYDS HAS ENGLISH TOUCH Dallas Woman Secured for Important Role BY. L.D. In closing its second season with "The Truth about Blayds," by A. A. Milne, the North Shore Theatre Guild feels that it is adhering in every way to the standards set by "Pygmalion," "Mixed Marriage," "Dear Brutus" and Alexander Dean "The Hero," four of its former suc- cesses. Milne is one of the greatest living English dramatists. His works are subtle and delicate in their satir- ical humor, his style whimsical. He is compared to Barrie. The laughs accorded this play will be very different from those called forth by "Come Seven," but laughs there will be, for there are very amusing scenes. Unusual Theme "The folly of fetichism" might be said to be the theme of the play. What to do if one finds that his house has been built on shifting sands--or worse still, on no foundation at all! "You can't climb very high on a lad- der unless you build it yourself," is] the clever deduction of one critic. It is, however, not a play with a moral obviously attached; but the sit- uations are so unusual as to almost compel one to arrive at some definite and satisfactory ethical conclusion. There may be as many conclusions as there are persons in the audience, for Milne forces none of his own. Alexander Dean, the director, has taken great pains to secure an ade- quate cast, one that is able to give the necessary touch of English at- mosphere. When Sam Otis, as Wil- liam Blayds Conway, steps on the stage, you can almost feel the fog in your face, don't you know! Clever Characterizations The play is not one of spirited ac- dependent tion, but one on clever GRACE FORBES SHOP Sport Apparel Summer Frocks Making Gowns and Frocks also Room 217 Hoyburn Theatre Bldg. 516 Davis St. EVANSTON Telephone 7467 LULL L720 277 7 7 277 27 77 7 777777 SAAT S SASS SS LSS SAIS SSI SAS SS SISSIES IIIA L272 277 777 2 22 27 7 ET Zl e077 "Hello!" Mrs. Laird Bell will play the daughter, Marian, simple but doting. *Mrs. Dor- othy Coe Dunham will play the rebel- lious granddaughter, and Mr. Francis Butler, the grandson. Mr. J. Wil- liams Macy, as Royce, the reporter, will help depict some of the most dramatic scenes of the play. The part of Isabel, the daughter, faithful through the years to her father, will be played by Mrs. R. E. L. Knight, Jr. of Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Knight played this part with great success when Mr. Dean produced the play in Dallas. It was a happy coin- cidence which brought her to Chicago at this time, and a still happier one that she should consent to play it for us. Her work is proving an inspira- tion as well as a challenge to our local artists. The schedule of dates for "Blayds" is as follows: Saturday evening, June 2: Jane Kuppenheimer Memorial Hall, Skokie School, Winnetka. Monday evening, June 4: Hall, Lake Forest. Tuesday evening, June 3: Neighbors club, Kenilworth. Wednesday evening, June 6: Evans- ton Woman's club. . There will be no reserved seats. Tickets will be on sale at the door.
