WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 1923 11 UTILITIES AID HOMELESS TOTS Organize Chapter of Chil- dren's Home, Aid Society The public utility companies of the State of Illinois have formed a utility employes' chapter of the Illinois Chil- dren's Home and Aid society. At the meeting where this was accomplished the by-laws adopted set out the object to be to enlist the support and interest of the men and women engaged in public service company work in the Illinois Children's Home and Aid society, which is devoted to the finding of homes for homeless children. At this meeting the officers, a board of governors, and seven standing com- mittees of the chapter were elected. The officers are chairman, John F. Gilchrist, Commonwealth Edison company, vice- chairman, Britton I. Budd, Chicago Ele- vated railroads; secretary, L.. C. Torrey, Chicago Elevated railroads; and treas- urer, F. H. Scheel, Utilities Securities company. The membership of this chapter in- cludes employes of all public utilities and affiliated companies in the State of Illinois. This means a potential mem- bership of approximately 25,000 people. It is expected to enroll this great num- ber of people in this humanitarian work, and to realize a large sum, all of which will be turned over to the parent body assuring the giver that his membership fee will be devoted to the actual allevia- tion of suffering. Incidental office and clerical expense will be borne by the public utility companies whose employes make up the chapter. Britton I. Budd, president of the Public Service company, is chairman of the General committee. SAVANT SEEKS AMERICAN TUT Ohio Archaeologist Probes Early Civilization Prediction that "a king who will out- rival Tut-ankh-Amen, of ancient Egypt, probably, will be found in Central or South America" has been made by Dr. William C. Mills, curator of the Ohio Archaeological and Historical Museum. "Right here in Ohio the Indians es- tablished cultures that exceeded in ar- tistic production anything ever found in Europe," declared Dr. Mills, who has bade exhaustive studies of prehistoric man in America. He said that Egyp- tian culture, splendor and romance were more than eclipsed in early American civilization. "The Spaniards, who came over for gold shortly after Columbus' ex- pedition, returned with great quantities," continued Dr. Mills. "Prehistoric man lived in Ohio as long as 10,000 years ago. Because the Ohio Indians had no form of writing it is difficult to determine just how long ago they herd sway in this part of the country. "Some ancient American ruler will come to light in the midst of a civili- zation as great, or greater, than that of ancient Egypt," asserted Dr. Mills. Katherine McGuire, one of the win- ners of a beauty contest conducted by a national magazine, plays the leading feminine role in "The Printer's Devil." Harry Meyers, contrary to report, will be seen opposite Miss McGuire. Are You a Member? CHICAGO MOTOR CLUB Established 1906 J. G. STANTON Winnetka Branch Mgr. P. Schulberg will shortly begin production on Owen Wister"s famous novel and play, "The Virginian." "The Virginian" was first published in 1902. When its stage version was produced, Dustin Farnum gained fame in the title role, with Frank Campeau as "Trampas." Later a second com- pany was assembled, with William S. Hart as the Virginian and Frank Campeau continuing in his role of the sheriff. Much of Hart's first stage popularity was built up through this engagement. Some time ago, Douglas Fairbanks purchased the much coveted screen rights to the story and announced it as his production to follow "Robin Hood." Later he abandoned the plan and Schul- berg approached him with an offer. Nego- tiations transferring the rights to Pre- ferred were closed a few weeks ago. T.
