WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 1923 "SANE FOURTH, CROWES ORDER State's Attorney Co-operates With Towns in Stopping Fireworks Sales NOTICES DISTRIBUTED "No Fireworks" Strict Rule For New Trier "No Fireworks," may be considered to be the slogan for the Fourth of July insofar as municipal offices and police departments of north shore vil- lages are concerned. For many years, now, the sale and use of fireworks within the villages of New Trier township has been forbidden in conse- quence of stringent "Sane Fourth" ordinances or resolutions. Notices are being posted at this pre- Fourth of July Season in Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka and Glencoe and strict enforcement of the law in this regard is promised. Crowe Takes Action Each year this enforcement pro- gram has been more or less hindered by reason of the fact that an abun- dance of pyrotechnic paraphernalia has been dispensed at improvised sales places on the outskirts of the north shore. There is indication that this condition will be remedied this year in the announcement by States Attorney Crowe that an intensive drive was to be launched to stop the sale of fireworks in Cook county. Numerous places has laid in large supplies to be thrown on the market during the next two weeks, it was said, and it is at these temporary dis- tribution points that Mr. Crowe is di- recting his attack. Finds Enormous Store Mr. Crowe's first move was aimed directly at Harry Cohen, formerly op- erating a store at 1930 Ogden avenue, Chicago, but who recently moved to Leyden township and placed in stor- age two carloads of firecrackers, Roman candles, torpedoes, and other explosives used on "The Fourth." Assistant State's Attorney Stanley Klarkowski was informed recently that the fireworks were stored in a barn on the River road. He ordered Cohen taken into custody. A trip was made to the barn and the supplies in- ventoried. Cohen was ordered to re- move them immediately from the county or they would be "dumped in- to the drainage canal." Three other complaints of fireworks being stored in the county were in- vestigated and the owners given sim- ilar orders. Mr. Crowe then issued orders to all his assistants to take every precaution to see that no fire- works are "bootlegged" into Chicago and suburbs between now and "The Fourth." Kindergarten College Announces Summer Work Advance registration indicates that the enrollment for the summer session of the National Kindergarten and Elemen- tary college, which opens June 18, will be decidedly larger than that of pre- vious years. The registration represents the young woman who wants to teach in the kindergarten and primary grades, the graduate teacher who is looking for insight into the new methods of educa- tion, the training teacher or supervisor, and the mother who realizes that the mother instinct must be improved upon by scientific study if she is to cope suc- cessfully with the modern American child. In addition to courses by Edna Dean Baker, president of the college, and other members of the regular faculty, the roster of teachers includes the names as such specialists as Dr. Elliott R. Downing of the University of Chi- cago, Dr. George L. Scherger of Armour Institute of Technology, and Etta M.
