WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 30, 1923 SCHOOLS FORGET THEIR IDEALISM Educator Scores "Almighty Dollar" Ethics Superintendent of Schools, W. J. Hamilton of Oak Park, addressed the students of the Summer session of the National Kindergarten and Elementary college this week on "The Relation of the Teacher to Her Profession." "Everyone is well aware of the vast dif- ference between 'keeping' school and 'teaching' school, said Supt. Hamilton. "Today there is an increasing demand for trained teachers who understand and put into practice a knowledge of how children learn, as well as what they learn." "We have not, however, reached the point where we have a definite code of ethics. Our minds are centered more upon the salary problem than upon a code of ethics. We are accustomed to the idea that the teachers constitute the underpaid and unappreciated class," con- tinued Supt. Hamilton. "We forget that education is costing the public more today than ever before in the history of the world. There is probably no other profession into which a young man or woman may enter which would pay bet- ter for the first seven or eight years, than that of teaching. "The teacher who begins to under- stand the fact that whatever she re- ceives in the way of remuneration must necessarily be given back in the highest type of service, is the one who is be- ginning to understand her relation to her profession, continued Supt. Hamil- ton. The teachers who are not doing their best work are those who are con- stantly measuring up the amount of work they are doing with the amount somebody else is not doing. The real teacher feels that no amount of money can pay for the service she is willing to give. This is idealistic," said Supt. Hamilton in conclusion, "but the teach- er must be an idealist. There is too much of the materialistic in our Amer- ican life today, and we are trying to re- duce all service to the common denom- inator of the "almighty dollar." NEW VACATION SPOT Chimney Canyons, out of Sterling, is a vacation setting newly discovered in Colorado and contains a scenic wonderland of red rocks and cedars, with delightfull camping spots that at- tract tourists bound for the Rockies. COLLEGE MEN HEADNG FOR EUROPEAN LANDS "Well, so long, fellows,--till we meet in August in Paris,--then for a dinner and a dance, just like a year ago." Several Northwestern boys who have a penchant for the high seas, for travel- ing about with no special objective, who surrender to the wander-lust each and every summer, recently met on the Ev- anston campus and parted with some such a message as the above. A year ago, one starry night when the Paris boulevards were a-glitter and every- body in the world seemed happy, a doz- en Northwestern fellows met and with as many American girls who also were on the wing, enjoyed a real dance, a La Patten gym, with now and then a cheer for alma mater and a bit of the North- western song. And so this year, the aim is to meet abroad once more. Who will be there? No one seems to know. James, "Jimmy" Paterson, of Wilmette, recently presi- dent of the departing seniors, has just started abroad. He has personal notes as to various Northwestern men and girls who are either now on the deep or are pointing in that direction. The rendezvous will be Paris or London this year, with Paterson and a half dozen other sons of the Purple anxious to re- new campus life and to shake a foot in a friendly dance to the tune of "Three A. M." or "Blue Danube." Jheodore-ehlin LAMDICOPE-JRCHITECT oe and oo , grounds &@ Rare 5 Terenniol : gardery: 172 IYRTLE-ST FHONE 1352 Winnetka. JIL.
