WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 14, 1923 4000 SEE FINALS OF TENNIS MEET Alonso, Big Drawing Card, Takes State Title More than 4,000 tennis fans gathered at the Skokie Country club Sunday after- non to see the finals in the singles and doubles in the Illinois State champion- ship tournament held last week on the hard courts of the Skokie club. Manuel Alonso, Spanish champion, was the out- standing player of the day, defeating William T. Tilden, America's premier tennis player, for the Illinois State championship. The sets between Alonso and Tilden went 8-6, 11-13, 6-3, 6-1. Although Tilden has been beaten by scattered players from America and Aus- tralia, Alonso is the first European who has beaten the American star. Both men displayed the very best kind of sports- manship through the match and both were highly applauded by the crowd. Al- onso as especially quick in the back court, covering it like a flash. Many of his points were won on passing strokes and he aced Tilden four or five times. Mrs. Wills Wins Another great favorite with the gal- leries was the California lass, Miss Helen Wills, who won the final round in the women's singles by defeating Miss Mar- ion Leighton of Chicago. Her spirited driving and rallies to the net for a speed- ing shot made the outcome of the match a foregone conclusion after a few games. The boy's doubles championship went to Cliff Nelson and Emmet Pare who defeated Donald Strachan and A. L. Weiner, Tilden's favorite. By beating Miss Margaret Delay, Ruth Dunscombe won the girls' singles final in 6-2, 6-4. Westbrook-Hayes, Champs Playing in great shape Walter West- brook, Detroit, and Walter Hayes, Chi- cago, won the final match for the doubles trophy by upsetting George Lott Jr., and Lawrence Rice, from Chicago and Bos- ton respectively. Earlier in the tourna- ment young Lott won the juniors' sin- gles championship by defeating David O'Laughlin, boy champion of the United States. Those who sponsored the tournament declare it to be one of the best that has been held in this part of the country. This statement is concurred in by North Shore tennis fans who watched the play.
