At the summer session, under the direction of Professor Leon Kranz of the Phys- ical Education department, 75 stu- dents are enrolled, taking work in the various branches offered. While the summer session course is not being offered during the school year, it is looked on favorably by the Athletic department, and with such a head as Doc Evans, and such a staff as Coaches Thistlethwaite, Kent and Hill, in addition to Prof. Kranz, Northwestern will be well fitted to take care of a regular school in the university, whose object will be to train college men to be athletic coaches. Just Come to Life The course, offered in a desultory way for the past five or six years, during the vacation months came to life, when Prof. Kranz took charge a year ago. That season 40 were en- rolled, while this summer 75 are tak- ing the work. The courses offered are basketball coaching and athletic management, playground management, physical training and hygiene for public school swimmer, and Cromer Houser, a base- ball prospect, are the other Purple lights, where any number of school teachers and coaches are in train- ing. The eight weeks' course is an in- tensive one, and gives the student an insight into the essentials of the game and the handling of men. In addition to the summer curricu- lum the athletic department is run- ning a tennis meet for the faculty and another tourney for the student body, both of which are to be played next week. A golf tournament is also planned. INSPECT DRINKING WATER The division of sanitary engineering, Illinois state department of public health, has practically completed the field inspections of the sources and methods of handling drinking water supplies for railroad trains in Illinois. Improvements have been recommended to some of the railroads and some of the watering points, and certification of these watering points will be withheld in reports to the Surgeon General until the necessary improvements have been made. Field inspections and numerous analyses are made for each of the watering points each year as re- quired by interstate quarantine regula- tions.
