WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1923 1 his direction the physical properties NEW R CT R AT of the church have been enlarged in a corresponding manner. b J The parish of St. Joseph has an ) interesting history, wrapped up as it Ld is with the growth of Wilmette and of the surrounding territory. Way back in 1671 the first church build- ing was constructed in the locality now known as Gross Point. It was a small frame structure operating un- der the direction of Father Pinet and called the Guardian Angel Mission. Members of the congregation were BR mostly Miami Indians. For a time this mission enjoyed unusual pros- NEUMANN IS RECTOR perity. Then came the English ex- peditions against the French, and in the resulting confusion the little church and congregation were wiped out. In 1844 a little band of German citizens from Treves (Trier), Ger- many, settled in the neighborhood. They named their village Gross Point. Then they built a church--the first St. Joseph church. A few years later the Frenchman, Ouilmette, came in- to the territory and settled with his friends between Gross Point and the lake. Rev. Netstraeter Becomes Rector Emeritus; to Stay in the Parish Assistant Rector Goes to Chicago Church Three important changes in the ministry of the St. Joseph Catholic parish, Wilmette and Gross Point, were made this week when the Rev. William Netstraeter, rector of the St. Joseph's church for the past 52 years, retired from active service to become rector emeritus of the parish; Rev. First Building in 1844 Twenty years later, during the pas- torate of Rev. Heschemann, the main auditorium of the present building was constructed. At that time the parish house stood next to the church, on what is now Lake street. Then Rev. Nedstraeter came to the vicinity in 1871. Immediately things began to hum. A wing was built onto the church building to serve as a school. Ten years later another wing was added to the West side of the church. The second wing was also used as a school. Then came the develop- ment of Wilmette, the opening of Lake street, the moving of the parish street, and the great growth of the church of which Rev. Netstraeter was minister. Rev. J. A. Neumann, who succeeds Rev. Netstraeter, has been at his present charge for eight years. Prev- ious to that appointment he spent a number of years at St. Henry's as assistant rector. Rev. Kramer, who has been of great aid to Rev. Net- straeter in the last eight years, has assumed full charge at the church left vacant by Rev. Neumann. Father Cramer has been extremely popular in the community and parti- cularly active in the affairs of the Ouilmette council, Knights of Colum- bus, of which he was chaplain. Rev. William Netstraeter J. A. Neumann, rector of a Chicago church, succeeded the retiring priest, - taking full charge of the local parish 1 today, and Rev. N. J. Kramer, -as- sistant rector of St. Joseph's for eight years, went to Chicago to take the place left vacant by Rev. Neumann. We have various sum- mer dresses on the rack. To be Rector Emeritus Rev. Netstraeter will continue to reside in the parish house as rector emeritus. Complete supervision of the work of the church, however, will be in the hands of the incoming min- ister from the St. Mauritius church, t Chicago. It was in 1872 that Father Net- straeter first came to Gross Point. The term of his pastorate was 52 years--the longest, it is said, of any minister in the country. During his ministry the St. Joseph parish has enjoyed a remarkable growth and development, starting with just a few pioneer people and expanding until it now numbers 400 families.
