WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1923 WOMEN ARE BEST DRIVERS, CLATY Chicago Safety Council Draws Conclusion in Review Of Auto Deaths CHILDREN HEAD TOLL Chauffeurs Have Safest Job Of All Women are better auto drivers than men. The driver of a car is safer than the passengers. The crossing is safer than the middle of the block. Seventy per cent of those killed by autos are pedestrians. Of these pedestrians nearly one half are children. These are the conclusions drawn by the Chicago Safety council after com- pleting an analysis of the 334 street deaths in Cook County during the first six months of this year. The analysis includes all deaths reported to the cor- oner's office as resulting from the opera- tion of motor vehicles. You're safer when you ride than when you walk, according to the Safety coun- cil's report. Of the 334 persons killed 237 were pedestrians, and only one of the 113 children killed was a passenger in an automobile. Women Best Drivers Evidence that women are better driv- ers than men is found by the Safety council in the fact that only seven wom- an drivers were involved in the 334 deaths. Refraining from comment on the "jay-walking" side of it, the Safety council reports that 264 men lost their lives as compared with but seventy women. Classified as to occupations, the death list shows the laborer and the housewife as following the most dangerous put- suits next to that of the school boy and girl who top the list with sixty-three fatalities. After them come the laborer with thirty-two and the housewife with twenty-two. The chauffeur has a com- paratively safe job and takes a place near the bottom of the list with only seven deaths. Driver Has Safe Job Behind the steering wheel is given as a much safer place than any other part of the car. Of the forty-seven passen- gers killed, only nine were at the wheel. Only one chauffeur of the seven killed met death while operating his car. The middle of the block is more dan- gerous than the crossing, according to the figures, which show 151 deaths at intersections and 157 between intersec- tions. In twenty-six instances the lo- cation of the accident was undetermined and in thirty-two the owner of the ve- hicle sped after the accident and made his escape. Children's Toll Heaviest A shift in the "dangerous age" was brought out by the analysis. At the end of every year the coroner's records show that children between the ages of five and ten years constitute the group of the rel- atively largest number of deaths. Last year this group led the list with a total of 136 deaths. For the first six months of this year, however, the five to ten group is second, and men and women between forty and fifty years of age lead the list. Commenting on this change, the Safe- ty council points out that it is the dang- erous summer and autumn months that take the great toll among children and put them at the top of the death list at the end of the year. During this period they have all day to play, and if their parents are not careful the children get into the street and the death toll be- gins. Bell, secretary-manager of the Chi- cago Safety council, "when parents will be subject to indictment of the bar of public opinion for failing in their duty to instruct children as to the danger of street accidents. Such failure on the part of the parents who are faced by these facts is almost parallel to the 'vampire' autoist who runs down a child with his car, fails to stop and aid his victim and who, under the new law, will be subject to severe punishment. "There is no better way for a woman to show mother love than to devote at least a short time everyday to instructing her children as to the dangers which lie between the two sides of a street."
