WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 28, 1923 WATER CARNIVAL HERE AUGUST 12 Second Annual Event Under the Direction of Tom Gonser "TOM" WILL BE THERE Call for Entries Before the Eighth of August Winnetka swimmers and devotees of the beach will have a chance to "show their stuff" on Sunday, August 12, for on that date is sched- uled the second annual Winnetka water carnival, according to an an- nouncement made this week by beach master Thomas A. Gonser, who is directing the affair. The water carnival is an annual event. The first carnival, held last July, was such a decided success its sponsors determined to make it a permanent summer activity . Last year's program, attended by 1,000 cit- izens, was also under Gonser's direc- tion and sponsored by the Winnetka Park Board. Robinson On Hand That the affair will really be some- thing worth while is shown by the fact that Tom Robinson, Northwest- ern university's véteran swimming coach, has been secured to act as starter and referee. Robinson has been at Northwestern for the past twelve years and has turned out many championship teams. "Tom" is rated as one of the best swimming coaches in the country. This year's program shows nineteen events for men, women and children of all ages. Some of the races have been restricted to boys under certain ages, others will be open for girls only, and still others are open to all comers. Married vs. Unmarried Other features on the card are a Winnetka distance championship race for men, and another for women. The married men will pull against the unmarried men in a tug of war and South Winnetka is slated to bat- tle North Winnetka in a push ball contest. Some of the events are open to all comers from the north shore and at least one of them, the relay, will decide the championship of the four villages, Glencoe, Winnetka, Kenilworth and Wilmette. The carnival program is scheduled to begin at 3:30 o'clock in the after- noon. Those who are directing the affair ask that persons wishing to take part in the carnival sign entry blanks and mail them to Thomas Gonser at the Winnetka office of Mc- Guire and Orr. The complete program of events follows: Program of Events 1:25 Yard Race (Boys under 12). NEW C. H. NOW TAKING SHAPE Rapid Progress This Week on Addition The new addition to Community House, of which A. S. Coffin is the architect, is progressing surely and swiftly under the able supervision of Superintendent Emil Kuester, of the Secord Construction company. Many changes have been rapidly taking place during the past week and, to the untechnical mind, a building seems to have grown over night. The great steel girders for the large center room have been erected and it is expected that the steel work will be completed this week. The brick layers are now at work in full force and the building should be fairly well closed in in two or three weeks. Boiler connections - are being made and the electricians are on hand. Superintendent Kuester is trying his best to complete the building as soon as possible and Community House leaders feel that he is to be congratulated on the splendid prog- ress which has been made in the comparatively short time in which the building has been under con- struction. RETURNS FROM VACATION John K. Johannessen, a member of the Winnetka police force, returned Wednesday from Starved Rock where he had been spending a part of his two weeks' vacation.
