L- -- ER, -- a WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 4, 1923 Neighborhood Theatres The New Evanston Pow | Howard Theatre Florence Vidor will star at the New Evanston theatre tonight and tomorrow in the picture "Alice Adams." On the same datés Larry Semon, uncontrol- able comedian, will frolic around the screen in the comic production "Mid- night Cabaret." "Alice Adams" is from the pen of Booth Tarkington, and has been called one of Tarkington's best productions. In the hands of a capable cast, led by the charming Florence Vidor, this film cannot fail to capture the interest and attention, perhaps the admiration, of all who see it. Those who are acquainted with the Semon type of comedy know what kind of topping the evening's en- tertainment will have. On the first three days of next week, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the New Evanston will feature the great Paramount production "Children of Jazz." In "Children of Jazz" Theodore Kosloff and Eileen Percy take the lead- ing part-- carrying them successfully throughout the play. The story is con- cerned with an eccentric father who can- not understand modern ways of living, and who shuts himself and family from contaminating influence by settling down on a lonely island. His son, however, is restless enough to leave the island. He goes to New York, falls in love and becomes engaged to a pretty girl, and then leaves for the Balkans. On his return he finds that King Jazz has usurped his place with his fiancee. Then things begin to happen and they keep on happening all through the rest of the picture. | Hoyburn Theatre ] J The Hoyburn can well afford to an- nounce the coming week's program with a feeling of pride, knowing that it is more than maintaining the high standard that it has always set. Opening on Monday, and running through Tuesday and Wednesday, the Hoyburn will produce "Scars of Jeal- ousy." This play has been called one The Howard theatre, easily accessible for north shore people and capable of handling large crowds comfortably, will open its week's program Sunday night with Alice Calhoun and James Morris as the leading attractions. Both of these players have many favorites in this vicinity. Miss Calhoun and Mr. Mor- rison are being starred in "The Man Next Door," a play that will be appre- ciated by movie lovers. "The Man Next Door" will also be produced at the Howard on Monday and Tuesday nights. "Fools First" will open for a two-day run on Wednesday night. Leading parts in this production are taken by Clair Windsor and Richard Dix, who easily carry the heavy parts of the play. "Fools First" appears for the last time at the Howard on Thursday. "Slander the Woman," featuring Dorothy Philips, will be the attraction at the Howard on Friday, Aug. 10. A woman of high social standing is ac- cused as the third party in the eternal triangle. Although freed from any criminal charge in the trial that follows the shooting, she feels that she is the subject of gossip and censure on all sides. Rather than face the charges, which she knows are false, she travels to her father's lodge on the coast of Hudson Bay. Here she is at last found by her lover--guess who he 'is--her name is cleared and she returns to civili- zation. Tomorrow night's program at this theatre features Dorothy Dalton in "The Law of the Lawless." In this picture Miss Dalton appears in a production that will hold your attention from start to finish. : | Adelphi Theatre | ho SY J The Adelphia theatre, one mile south of Howard street on North Clark, is featuring "The Hero" as its chief at- traction tomorrow night. Tonight "Slippy McGee" is being fea- tured at this Evanston movie. Wheeler Oakman and Colleen Moore play the leads in this film. On Saturday, to- morrow, for one day only, William Dun- can may be seen in "Playing It Wild." This is an entertaining western play in which love is finally triumphant over crooked politics.
