_D. Brandriff defeated G. 18 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 1923 - At North Shore Golf Links | By Wallace Abbey A visitor stepped in at Westmoreland last Thursday and won major honors in the annual Tam O'Shanter tourna- ment of the club, the feature golf event of the week. After William B. Huey and Dr. E. H. Raedel of the home guard had tied Wednesday in the qualifying round with duplicate cards of 40-38-78, Ike W. Lincoln of Flossmoor, champion of the Lumbermen's Golf association, stroked his way to victory in the final round with a score of 81-78-159. In winning the first flight prize Lin- coln was just one stroke ahead of West- moreland's champion, Jimmy Archer, who finished with 80-80-160. Third place went to Dr. Raedel, 84-82-1066, while George Packard of Evanston took fourth with 84-84-168. Walter Ahl- schlager of Evanston finished with 89- 80-169 and J. M. Boggs of the home club rounded out the day with 174. Westmoreland players were victorious in the second and third flights, Fred Burnaby winning the former with 78- 84-162, and N. C. Naylor taking the latter with 82-83-166. C. E. Karstrom of Bob O"Link broke in to win the fourth flight with 90-82-172, but C. V. Burg- hart gave Westmoreland the fifth with 89-89-178. All North Shore golf clubs were silent last Friday during the hours of the fun- eral of the late president Harding. Glen View, Westmoreland, Skokie, Indian Hill, Evanston, North Shore, Bob O'Link and Onwentsia, as well as the public courses, readily complied with the re- quest of the United Golf association and suspended activities Friday afternoon. William Parker of Lake Shore placed second last week at Ravisloe in the an- nual caddy masters' tournament of the Chicago District Golf association, with a card of 71-75-146, and William 'Cham- berlain of Onwentsia came third with 78-71-1499. J. E. Noonan of Dixmoor landed the title with a score of 71-75- 146. The play was in connection with the caddy tournament, the results of which have not been announced pending inves- tigation into the eligibility of some players. However, Skokie, Lake Shore, Bob O'Link and Exmoor boys played high and it is likely that North Shore will boast the champion when the news is given out. Rain, for the first time this season, interfered with golf along the shore last week. The two storms on Friday and Saturday nights wrought havoc on many courses and delayed play. At Glen View the regular Saturday events were can- celled and indoor sports substituted, while players on other links found the going hard. Skokie continued its rlay for Indian cups Saturday despite the downpour Fri- day night and the field was considerably narrowed down by nightfall. J. H. Bullen, J. D. Cunningham and W. A. Levering advanced toward the Oneida cup, while S. L. Williams and C. D. Brandriff made progress in the direction of the Onondage trophy. Winners in the blind bogey event the same days were A. S. Webster, 93-18- 75; M. C. Shope, 89-13-76; W. K. Childs, 79-2-77; and L. Hopkins, 97-20- 77. Complete results of the Indian cup play were as follows: ONEIDA CUP--]J. H. Bullen defeated A. S. Webster, 2 up; J. D. Cunningham defeated F. W. Preston, 4 and 3; W. A. Levering defeated Dr. Frank Braw- ley, 1 up. ONONDAGA CUP--S. L. Williams won by default from W. E. Burch; C. Harper, 3 and 1. E. Routh and R. S. Laird played on the winning foursome at Indian Hill Satur- day in the main event of the day. They scored 36-35-71-6-65. T. J. Harvey of Evanston Community created quite a flurry in the city title meet at Jackson Park last week by win- ning his way into the semi-finals, only to fall before William Wallace, Lincoln Park, 4 and 3. The title went to 21- year-old Joe Finn of Jackson Park, who eliminated Wallace, 1 up, Sunday over a water soaked course. Harvey disposed of Walter Crowe, Columbus Park, in the first match round, 5 and 3, and came through the second round by defeating C. Windette, Jack- son Park, 3 and 2. To reach the semi- finals he had to ride over T. J. Mona- han, Jackson Park, 6 and 4, in the third round. Harvey qualified with 35-37-72, one stroke above the two leaders, Eld- ridge Robinson and Walter Crowe, both of whom made 71's. E. Meyer, Evans- ton Community, Matt Jans, Fvanston Community and P. R. Kreeger, Winnetka Playfield, also qualified, but were elimi- nated early in the match play for the title. J. W. Douglass and FE. J. Stocking made things interesting at Westmore- fand Saturday by tying for the blind bogey prize with cards of 99-10-89 and 109-20-89. A. C. Hammond had little trouble in winning the sweepstakes with 83-7-76, while a card of 88-16-72 gave the weekly fellowship cup to J. C. Mec- Kinley. Mrs. Lee Wi. Mida of Butterfield took two tournaments of the Women's West- ern Golf association last week, the first at Briergate 'where she set a new course record with her score of 54-43-88, and the second at Indian Hill where she went three strokes under women's par to win with 40-42-82, equalling her own low gross record set last year. Mrs. H. D. Raymond of Evanston Golf club, with eight points, won the approaching and putting contest at the Briergate tourney. . Fvanston Golf club had a busy week with the women's events on Monday and the regular events on Saturday. Mrs. J. W. Taylor and Mrs. W. W. Haerther tied in Class A Monday in the match play against par, but Mrs. Taylor, who had 88 as low gross of all the players, won the draw for the prize. Mrs. M. C. Peterson, 1 down, won class B, second going to Mrs. I. D. Mathias, 2 down. Mrs. H. D. Raymond, 91-7-84, and Mrs. Haerther, 94-10-84, tied for low medal score in the qualifying round of the Palmer and Glenton trophy play. On Saturday Howard Raymond, 75- 88-163, topped the field in the thirty- six hole qualifying round for the club championship. Other qualifiers were: J. E. Rend, 165; W. W. Abhlschlager, 165; Leon Savaria, 168; C. F. Murray, 173; A. Huey, 178; M. C. Beymer, 180; and W. H. Meyst, 182. Ahlschlager and Savaria tied in the blind bogey with 78's. Skokie scored 67% points last Thurs- day in the women's north shore team matches, Evanston getting 65%, Glen View, 56, Exmoor, 56. Westmoreland 45% and Indian Hill 34%. Despite its poor showing last week Indian Hill leads with 311 counters, Evanston com- ing second with 269 and Westmoreland third with 267%. Jock Hutchison, of Glen View, paired with Frank Godchaux, last Saturday, lost a special exhibition match to Bobby Jones of Atlanta, new national open champion, and Percy Adair at Nash- ville, Tenn., six out of seven points under the Nassau system of scoring.
