4 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1923 MAIL CARRIERS SEEK HOLIDAY Ask Residents to Vote on Saturday Half-holiday If you receive mail in Winnetka you "will, by virtue of that fact, be invited "to cast your ballot in a village-wide "election" during the next few weeks to be conducted by the carriers of the Winnetka post office. Getting down to cases--the Winnetka carriers, in company with their fellow carriers throughout the country are seek- ing a Saturday half-holiday. The De- partment at Washington favors the plan, it is explained, and the local postal officials are in accord with the request, but it has been thought best to rest the decision with the people who receive the mail Within the next week Winnetka car- riers will distribute "ballots" in the homes of the village, calling upon the residents to express themselves con- cerning the proposed half-holiday or "Saturday afternoons off." The "ballot" will read essentially as follows: "In accordance with the sug- gestion in the Winnetka Talk of Octo- 'ber 13, we hereby cast our vote on the question of a half-holiday on Saturday for our mail carriers." Voting is to be done within the next two weeks, it is explained, at the con- clusion of which time the ballots will be collected and the decision of the balloters made public. "Every person receiving mail in the village is eligible to vete in this elec- tion," it is stated. Sixty percent of eastern cities have voted favorably on the Saturday half- holiday. Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha and Waukegan also have approved the plan. Join Friendship Circle, Working Girls Are Urged Friendship Circle, the Community House club for working girls, started its 1923-24 season Tuesday evening of this week when some 30 young women enjoyed a session in the gym followed by a social hour. The circle will meet every Tuesday evening during the Community House year. The first of the Friendship Circle special festivities is scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, when the girls will stage an old-fashioned Hallow- e'en party. The Talk has been requested to ap- peal to the matrons of the village to advise girls employed in their homes of the splendid opportunities for re- «creational and social companionship afforded by the circle. Every work- ing girl in a Winnetka home should become a member of Friendship Cir- cle, its members feel, and it is hoped every girl will be made acquainted with its activities. The cost is neg- ligible; the friendships cultivated in- valuable. Read the Winnetka Talk AS NICE AS THEY LOOK Qur bolognas sausages, etc, are even nicer to taste . This is by no means the first time that the firemen have been called to that scene and, if the ground had not been quite so damp, the sod, which is composed of inflammable peat and de- cayed vegetation, would have provid- ed serious trouble, according to Chief Houren. Over Million in Deposits, State Bank Gives Dinner President Henry R. Hale was host Thursday evening, October 11, to the entire staff of the Winnetka State Bank at a dinner given at The Or- rington, Evanston, in celebration of the achievement by the banking house of more than one million dollars in deposits. The dinner also served to celebrate the first anniversary of the entrance into the new bank building on Elm street, which took place October 2 1922. The growth of business evidenced in the steady increase in deposits, has brought many expressions of praise from friends of the bank.
