A large increase in attendance at New | Trier this year was prevented by an un- ustial slump in the number of freshman gitls entering. Thus, the attendance of 1922, which was 1,221, has been raised to only 1,234, though this number will probably be increased by new entrants who come in during the year. - The freshman girls usually equal or surpass the boys in enrollment, but this year they came in 176 strong, while the new boys are 225 in number. The sopho- more class shows a perfect balance of 185 boys and 185 girls, the juniors have 136 girls and six less boys, and the seniors, numbering 109 to 88, in. favor of, the girls. i After reading all these figures for this year, it may be interesting by' way of| comparison to note that the enroll ment of twenty-two years ago was 79, which means the school has grown at the average rate of fifty-five pupils a year since that time. Ithough the attendance of girls is fairly regular throughout the four years of high school, scarcely more than forty per cent of - the freshman boys ever graduate. Each year they grow less, until fewer than half their original number receive diplomas the- last June. Civesin Buries Laborer, Floyd Voltz, Rescuer "After working more than an hour, oyd Volitz, 510 Linden avenue, Tues- day of this week succeeded in rescuing a laborer who had been caught in a dhve-in while digging a ditch at Win- ntetka avenue and Sheridan road, when The ground caved in on him Tuesday morning, October 16. 1 Voltz, working nearby, heard the dis- tressed man's cry for help and immediate- ly proceeded to dig him out. For a time the task seemed almost useless, for as soon as the dirt was removed, another cave-in resulted. The unfortunate la- borer was eventually extricated, none the worse for the harrowing experience. ' BURGLAR ALARM CLOCK An electrically operated burglar alarm clock connected with the Winnetka State bank and the Winnetka post office, has cen installed at local police headquarters. By test, the clock demonstrated com- plete efficiency, according to Chief Beterson. = fo VILLAGE OF WINNETKA.
