i WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, . SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1923 13TH CHARR IS NERVE WRECKER Rate So Find It At Any Coppers Residents living in the vicinity of Winnetka Community House have re- cently been mystified and awed by eerie shrieks, moanings and other ectoplasmic manifestations usually connected with denizens of the ghost world, coming from the upper floor of that popular center. Not that any- one believed the Community House to be haunted. Oh no--but then there had been stories and rumors about noises, queer lights and other dis- turbances until finally one overly ner- vous matron phoned the minions of the law and asked an investigation. For one whole night they prowled around the Community House armed with the latest ghost nets, goblin guns, shriek detectors, skeleton bombs, ectoplasm chasers plus the moral sup- port of the village bloodhound. But--nary a trace of a ghost. How- ever--they were resourceful. More over they were determined. They swore by all the shades of Conan Doyle to put a stop to these revels of the ephemeral realm. Therefore, they double-crossed the ghosts by staying away for one night. The next night, under a ghostly moon, they were back with all the phantom catching paraphernalia and carrying a supply of freshly made flvpaper. For hours they waited, accompanied by the valiant bloodhound eagerly waiting and praying that the filmy visions would come forth and do their stuff : moreover, it was cold. In fact they became so cold that some of their outlving precincts refused to be heard from. Hours passed. At the a ghostly shriek pierced the clear night air. The bloodhound, gurgling in glee at the anticipated fray, tugged at his leash. The men took a hitch in their belts, spat disdainfully on their hands and strode forth to battle. More shrieks. More ghostly lights. Then rustlings in the upper hall Cautiously they approached one of the closed doors from whence eman- ated these peculiar sounds of the ethereal world. Nothing daunted they emitted blood 'curdling yells, called on the patron 'saint of all-geod policemen, whipped: out the .45, spurred the hound to ac- tion and crashed through the door. Shades of Conan Doyle! There, in a room fully lighted, arrayed .in the latest creations of fashion were not filmy visions as they expected, but 15 or 20 perfectly material flesh and bone folks going through the process of killing one of their members. In fact, this is what" the intrepid 'authorities thought until smiling Sid- ney Spiegel, president of the North Shore Players approached and said "Welcome, men, we're just rehearsing the mysterious murder of Edward Wales for our latest North Shore pro- duction 'The 13th Chair, we are here every night 'from. ... ... i SUNDAY MARK) CLUB CLOSING North Shore Golf Club For- sakes Old Site stroke of 10, Shore Golf club of Kenil- worth, will be formally closed Sunday, November 11, at which time every- thing will be packed up and the club house locked for the winter.
