New Trier Hears Him Lauded by Educator Last week New Trier High school offered its students the opportunity of hearing Mr. Loomis, principal of Hyde Park High school, of Chicago, speak on the subject, "Lloyd George." Mr. Loomis began with the opinion that in later years Lloyd George will be famous not so much for his part in the world war, great as it was, but rather for his courage and persistence in the period preceding. In citing incidents to prove his belief, Mr. Loomis told how Lloyd George sided with the Boers dur- ing the Boer War, and was not afraid to set forth his convictions, even though by doing so he endangered his popular- * qty and political success... Then a few years later, when money was needed for building battleships to compete with the growing navy of Germany, the little Welshman proposed a tax on the large - property possessions of the British lords. Such a suggestion raised a storm of protest from the aristrocracy, but Lloyd George firmly held his ground. While telling these interesting happen- ings, Mr. Loomis gave a brief but very clear history of the struggle of the English people to control the taxing power; and how they succeeded in their undertaking by securing to the House of Commons the privilege of originating 'bills for levying taxes. "This method," said Mr. Loomis, "was adopted by the framers of our own Constitution when they restrained the Senate from originating any tax meas- ures, and. left that right to the House of Representatives." lift the receiver of telephone 1s made? at any of our offices. ways to help you use advantage.
