4 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1923 TALENTED FISK "SINGERS COMING Present Negro Spirituals at Church The Fisk Jubilee Singers are to ap- pear Tuesday evening, November 27, at the Winnetka Congregational church. For a half-century the university they represent has been training singers in its music department to interpret the old plantation melodies and spirituals and they have appeared and met with suc- cess in every state in the Union. They sang, too, in Kurope--by royal com- mand before Queen Victoria, and in the courts of continental Kurope, returning with enough money to buy the present campus of Fisk university, on a hill overlooking Nashville. Their songs, which form America's one outstanding contribution to the world's music, originated in the cotton fields in the primitive religious meetings which were held secretly in the woods by the slaves. More recently Fisk university has given the musical world a great inter- preter of these folk songs in the per- son of Roland Hayes, who, not long since, returned from a most successful European tour and has the distinction of being the first negro ever to become soloist with the Boston and Detroit Symphony orchestras. Adams Pharmacy ELM AND LINDEN Winnetka 2 The Rexall Drug Siore Sisters Battle When Husbands Fight in Court [t would not be surprising should Magistrate Mickey of the Wilmette police court decide to go on another duck hunting expedition after this week's business of patching up difficul- ties in the Keras-Karugtos relationship. For some unknown reason the two families, comprising Mr. and Mrs. Sam Keras of lake Forest, and Mr. and Mrs. Futhemias Karugtos of Milwau- kee, selected Wilmette as a battle ground, and staged a real feud in the vicinity of the Wilmette confectionery carly this week. Sam and Euthemias claim to be real brothers, though the names would never lead one to suspect such a relationship. Also, Mrs. Sam and Mrs. Euthemias declare they are sisters. Now it ap- pears that Sam is "indebted" to Kuthe- mias to the extent of $250, a sum al- leged to have been appropriated on the latter's wedding day a year ago. Eu- themias and his fond wife awaited patiently the opportunity to catch Sam sometime and demand payment. They learned he was to be in Wilmette Mon- day night, so proceeded to secure a war- rant for his arrest before Magistrate Mickey. Local police met Sam at the station and escorted him to a cell in the village goal. Meanwhile, Sam's wife appears on the scene, encounters Kuthemias' wife (her sister) in the Wilmette confec- tionery and proceeds to do battle a la Amazon. The police interfered. On Tuesday Magistrate Mickey fined cach of the women $10 and costs, and ordered Sam to be sent to Milwaukee to answer the charge of having "borrowed" $250 from FKEuthemias' funds. The machine arrived in time to make it possible for the pupils to enter the music memory contest, and 1s already at work. Many of the parents have kindly loaned records of the selections on the music memory list. The machine is a laboratory model Edison, and cost $295. The money raised last spring by the concert was only $65 and the dramatic class has underwritten the remainder of the expense, for it was felt that in buying a machine which was going to be used in the class in music apprecia- year tion, that it was absolutely essential that the best phenograph available be' pur- chased. After a most careful compari- son of all the phonographs on the mar- ket, this particular machine was chosen. Everybody is coming to see that to "save" on price is to pay more later--with nothing to show for the money. The better buyer a man is the quicker he sees that Packard Single- Six is the only car he can really justify on an investment basis. : - Figure it out. Packard Single-Six owners get 16 to 18 miles to the gal- PACKARD MOTOR CAR Who Has the Better Bargain-- ~ You or Your Packard Neighbor? lon ot gas. They get up te 20,000 miles or more to the set of tires. Owners of other cars envy them for their freedom from mechanical annoyances. And Single-Six own- ers know that the gas and oil and tire savings go a long way toward paying the mechanical mainte- nance needed by the Packard. The Packard Single-Six is good for many years--and when it is turned in for another Packard it has cost less and given more than any car on the road. The facts are becoming known-- and Packard sales are growing as never before. COMPANY OF CHICAGO (Evanston Branch) 1629 Orrington Ave. PACKARD ~- 5] Evanston 710 dt »
