2 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1923 GET HINTS FOR FINER WINNETKA Well Known City Planner Gives Some Advice to Indian Hill Association CITES "BAD" SPOTS Suggests"Moré 'Lake Front- age for Parks » is . Reriorw, 3 . Re At a well-attended mefting of the Indian Hil Improvement association, held Monday 'evening, ecember 3, at the Greeley school, Myron . West, city planner, gave an interesting discus- sion of the importante of looking ahead and planning} for . the future in the de- velopment of communities in general and of north shore towns in particular. Mr. West made a number of specific recommendations applicable to the In- dian Hill section of Winnetka, the most important of 'which were: -- The Improvement and Beautification of the Station Facilities--Mr. West designated the station ras the commun- 'ity's® "front door," and stressed the im- portance of providing, at an early. date, facilities which will be not only: safe and * adequate: - for future needs, but 'which will also provide a beauty spot in keeping with 'the rcently installed sta- tion park at Indian Hill. : Should Care for Trees More Attention to the Care and Planting of Trees in thé Parkways-- "The care of trees in the parkways and the planting" of additional trees," said Mr. West, "should be a community un- dertaking and not left to the individual. 'The trees in Indian Hill give evidence of lack of care and of planning for the future. This is doubtless due to an in- adequate appropriation, though a large appropriation is not necessary, and the importance of the subject to a residen- tial community such as Winnetka war- rants more attention. Mr. West then cited the experience of Buffalo, which, on a comparatively small outlay, has, over a period of ten years, improved its trees until they are now regarded as a priceless asset. Need More Lake Frontage Increased Lake Frontage--Mr. West pointed out that Winnetka at present has only about 1,000 feet of lake front- age for public usage. Drawing on his experience in other communities, he stated that, while this may appear ade- quate for the present, the future need of the Village justifies immediate con- sideration, while space is available, to the question of obtaining additional frontage. Improving School Grounds--While stressing the good fortune of the neigh- borhood in its splendid school grounds, allowing, as they do, for large future growth, Mr. West pointed out their rather unsightly appearance and stress- ed the importance, from a standpoint of beautification, of more thought to- ward improved landscaping of these grounds, Supervision of New Real Estate De- strongly the necessity for careful sup- ervision of all new real estate subd.vi- sions and developments, even though these might be on the fringe or even outside of the village limits. He cited the fact that Illinois statutes provide for the approval. of street platting out- side village limits where no other in- corporated communities are encounter- ed. The lack of such supervision, Mr. West stated, has been largely responsi- ble for the hit or miss developments all too frequently found in territory ad- joining, and often within, the average American community. Lauds Sunset Park Sunset Road Park--The center park in Sunset road offers a splendid oppor- tunity, Mr. West pointed out, for an additional beauty spot in South Win- netka. "Control of this park should, however, rest with the village, rather than with the abutting property owners," stated Mr. West, substantiating his viewpoint with the experience of other communities in dealing with similar situations. Following Mr. West's talk, the regu- lar business session of the association was held, during which a number of im- portant matters were discussed. Among these were--improved train service, in- vestigation of the proposed building project on the south side of Winnetka avenue, and plans for an entertainment at a latter date. Following the business, the entertain- ment and refreshment committee contri- buted toward making the social side of the evening a great success.
