. 6 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1923 LOCK UP HOME WHEN LEAVING Police Kept Busy with Un- locked Doors Significant in the November report of the Winnetka Police department is the fact that 211 buildings were found open by patrolmen during the night hours. Many of these were private residences, according to Chief Peter- son, thus indicating gross carelessness on the part of many householders in the face of repeated appeals from police headquarters for co-operation in dis- couraging burglars and prowlers by at least taking the ordinary precautions to protect the homes. . Records of the month show 30 ar- rests for traffic violations, 2 for dis- orderly conduct, and 2 for violation of the liquor laws. One burglary was recorded during the month. There were 5 automobile accidents, 211 buildings found open, 24 disturbances suppressed, 2 lost children restored and 36 station complaints, un- classed cases totaling 240. In the report Chief Peterson states the effectiveness of the new system of auto patrol in the different sections of the village was demonstrated on the evening of November 3, when three Winnetka patrolmen routed prowlers from the Stuart residence at 280 Sheri- dan road. The miscreants effected es- cape after a thrilling gun battle with the police. It is indicated in the report that the largest number of complaints entered by patrolmen, was in buildings found open during the night hours. Chief Peterson expresses the hope that busi- ness people and householders will prac- tice greater care in this regard in the future. New Tencher Added to Hubbard Woods Staff Miss Edna Oatley, the sixth grade teacher at the Hubbard Woods school, has had to resign on account of her health. Her position has been filled by Miss Dorothy Bishop. Miss Bishop formerly attended Wellesley college, then graduated from the University of Michigan. Later she took a year at Michigan Agriculture college, and has just this last year taken her master's degree from the tiniversity. She has had _eight years of experience in elemen- tary and high schools. This past year she has been research assistant in the Psychopathic Institute in Detroit. She comes recommended by Professor Woody of the University of Michigan, who knows the Winnetka schools through personal visits, and who states that she is the sort of teacher who will be a credit to the schools and a help and inspiration to the children coming under her instruc- tion Hubbard Woods School Addition Is Completed The new addition to the Hubbard Woods school, which was just recent- ly completed, was put into use for the first time on Monday, December 3. The annex consists of four rooms with an office, rest room, and kitchen- ette, which will be used by the teachers of the school in preparing noon day luncheons. The Parent-Teacher asso- ciation is furnishing the rest room and library which are expected to be the best equipped on the north shore. In the past the crowded condition of the school has made it necessary to have only half-day sessions, but the new ad- dition has answered the question of ac- commodation for all the pupils and the children will now attend school through- out the day. A Miracle or Nativity play will be presented by the Dramatic club, {followed by orchestra numbers and the singing of Christmas carols, which will do much to accentuate the Christmas spirit for those who accept the invitation. The play is an old one of the four- teenth or fifteenth century dealing with the story of the Eastern star, the three shepherds and the three kings at the scene of the birth of Christ. This play offers an extraordinary oppor- tunity for beautiful scenic effects and tableau staging. This play has be- come a part of the community cele- bration in the town of Summit, New Jersey, much as is the Miracle play in Europe. After the play, which will be pre- sented from 4 to 5 o'clock, a light supper will be served at a nominal fee. Then from 6 to 7 o'clock, after some orchestra numbers, the glee clubs and Chorals will sing a cantata, "The Story of Christmas," by Mat- thews. Miss Irma Moschell of the New Trier faculty, a highly trained singer, will be one of the soloists, as will also Ridgeway Daggy, a New Trier student, and Miss Barbara Waite, a singer of high repute. Fol- lowing that, the Christmas carols will be sung. The school organizations which have taken up this affair, including its financial and working responsi- bilities, are doing it for the benefit of everyone in the north shore com- munity, and a record attendance is anticipated. BUYS SOUTH END PROPERTY Herman Tergenheimer has . pur- chased the 133 by 140 feet of vacant property on Winnetka avenue, west of Warwick road, in Winnetka, from William Pempel for an indicated sum of $50,000. Goodspeed of the University of Chicago, translator of "The New Testament--An American Translation." The addresses are attracting village- wide attention and Christ church is considered very fortunate in securing Prof. Goodspeed, since it is a well known fact that he has cancelled scores oi speaking engagements in the past several months, since his work, now published serially in many daily news- papers, created a distinct sensation up- on its appearance last summer. For Monday evening, December 10, Prof. Goodspeed has chosen the sub- ject, "The first putting of the Greek New Testament into English." The meeting starts promptly at 8:15. Every resident of the village is cordially in- vited to attend the lecture. MUSINGS OF A TELEPHONE GIRL The way a man acts when you give him the busy signal gives you a pretty good idea what kind of a fellow he is. Kind words don't cost any more than mean ones. Prof. Children Delighted at Marionette Performance About 400 children gathered in the Jane Kuppenheimer Memorial hall at the Skokie school Wednesday after- noon, December 5, to see Tony Sarg's Marionettes. The program began shortly after school session and continued until nearly 6 o'clock and was an excellent entertainment throughout.
