14 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1923 N. U. OPENS CAGE SEASON Plays Notre Dame Next Wednesday Night Northwestern's basketball opens in FKvanston Saturday night, December 15, when Coach Maurie Kent sends his purple charges against the visiting five from Miliken college, Decatur. The visitors are coached by Rollie Williams. famous football and basketball star at Wisconsin Univer- sity last year. * Coach Kent plans to utilize the game to get a line on the material he has to work with this season and to get the men in shape for the contest with Notre Dame to be played at South Bend Wednesday, December 19. With the exception of Captain Steg- man, the Purple will put an entire new team on the floor this year. Graduation last spring depleted the squad of every regular with the ex- ception of Stegman. Russell Rapp and "Swede" Johnson, who saw some service last season, will probably fill in at the guard positions this season. Other promising guard candidates are Mathews and Graham, of last year's frosh squad, and Hawes, who played in several of last season's games. The forwards at present do not line up as strong as the other departments of the team, but are improving. Ker- shaw, Stegman and Mcl.ennon are making the choice of the forward combination somewhat difficult. In the face of the uncertainty; can- cerning the eligibility" of Gerecke;"the center job is pretty much unsettled at present. Should Gerecke be ruled-out of the play, his position will probably be filled by Heppes or Martin. season Final Goodspeed Talk Scheduled for Dec. 17 The last of a series of four highly interesting "Advent addresses by Prof. Fdgar J. Goodspeed of the Univer- sity of Chicago, translator of "The New Testament--An American Trans- lation," will be held Monday evening, December 17, in the Parish House of Christ church, Oak and Linden ave- nues. The Goodspeed addresses have at- tracted the attention of villagers be- cause of the educator's able treatment of a subject which in the past several months has been a matter of discus- sion at church and university coun- cils throughout the country following the publication of the Goodspeed translation. "The New Testament Today," is to be the subject of the final lecture. The address begins promptly at 8 o'clock and every resident of the vil- lage is invited to attend. A turkey, a chicken, a roast? The beautiful old custom that had once been universal in England had all but died. The widespread adoption of the Com- munity Christmas Tree did much to bring the carols to public attention again. Yet the singing of the charm- ing old Yuletide songs for the public benefit was all too infrequent and the general absence of the "waits," the traveling bands of carolers, in their pic- turesque red cambric capes, was particu- larly regrettable. The National Bureau for the Ad- vancement of Music, which is interested in. extending more widely the influence and utilization of music among the American people, saw in the Christmas Caroling one of the most inspiring uses of song, as a satisfaction to the singer, a joy to the community, and a means of expressing the Christmas spirit. In 1917, therefore, shortly after its own inception, the Bureau, at the suggestion of C. A. Grinnell of Detroit, began working actively for the country-wide expansion of the custom. It pointed as a model to the splendid organization for Christmas singing that had been worked out on a city-wide scale in De- troit. As a further aid to the move- ment the Bureau issued its booklet, "Christmas Eve Caroling Being Revived," giving a brief outline of the history of the custom and instructions for procedure to those 'interested in carrying out the plan locally. By this time the movement had made the first edition of the booklet, a year after ef- forts were made to revive the move- ment, 30 cities and towns in which the outdoor caroling had been introduced were included. Thére were undoubtedly more "than 'this ntimber, but the Bureau had not full facilities for tracing them. By the time the second edition was pub- lished in October 1, 1920, the list was more than trebled and it has continued to grow with astonishing rapidity ever since, as the following figures taken from the Bureau's record will show : 30 cities and towns December, 1918 110 cities and towns December, 1919 330 cities and towns December, 1920 667 cities and towns December, 1921 *1184 «ities and towns December, 1922 North Shore Window & House Cleaning Co. 10 Prouty Annex, Phone Win. 1994 Winnetka, IIL *This figure does not inciude 300 ct- ies and towns included in the previous surveys but from which no reports were received as to 1922, although a large percentage of them undoubtedly obsery- ed the custom. The response of the public, scattered from coast to coast and from the Cana- dian border to the Gulf 'of Mexico, fur- nishes convincing evidence that the ou'- door Christmas Caroling has struck : popular chord and fulfills a popular de- sire. Some of the cities were large, others small. Some had carcling groups enough to cover the entire area, others for but one or two districts; while in still others carols were sung around the community Christmas tree only. The information was gathered from news- paper clippings from all parts of the country, as well as by direct correspon- dence, and it is probable that many cit- ies were overlooked. No places were included where the caroling was sim- ply an indoor or church event. Don't use the word tubercular. Leave that to the doctors.
