WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1923 DEATH SUMMONS WOMAN LEADER Winnetka Mourns Loss of Mrs. Ira Couch Wood Winnetka is mourning the untimely death of Mrs. Ira Couch Wood, form- er civic leader in the community, who passed away Tuesday, December 18, at her home, 10 E. Schiller street, Chicago. Services were held Friday afternoon from St. Chrysostom's church, Chi- cago, conducted by the Rev. E. Ash- ley Gerhard, pastor of Christ church, Winnetka, of which Mrs. Wood was a devoted member. Burial was at Forest Home. Mrs. Wood, who was a nationally known social worker as director of the Elizabeth McCormick Memorial fund for promotion of child welfare, resided in Winnetka for several years prior to making her home in Chicago shortly after the World war. - First Woman Trustee She was a charter and honorary member of the Winnetka Woman's club, was the first president of the Winnetka Relief and Aid society and the first woman member of the Vil- lage council. In her capacity as trustee Mrs. Wood assumed an active interest in the Village Plan idea and was a staunch supporter of the project throughout the period of her official connection with the municipal govern- ment. She was prominently identified with local civic work and development dur- ing her long residence in the village, and served as a member of the House committee of the Woman's club in which work she was responsible in a large measure for the establishment of the close relationship between the club and Community House. Devoted to Church Work Mrs. Wood retained her affiliation with Christ church parish until her death. She was one of the most de- voted workers in the parish and keen- ly interested in the development of its every department of activity. She was an ardent leader in Sunday school work and in all phases of child wel- fare enterprises. Mrs. Alice Wicker Wood was born in St. Louis, Mo., and educated in the Evanston public schools. Mrs. Wood attracted wide attention in Chicago and throughout the coun- try during the late war when she organized and was appointed secre- tary of the woman's committee of the Council of National Defense. She had previously been elected president of the Illinois Training school for Nurses and, in 1917, a director of the Elizabeth McCormick Memorial fund. She was also chairman of the Child Welfare division of the General Federation of Woman's clubs. As a member of the advisory com- mittee on civic development of the United States Chamber of Commerce, she labored unceasingly in the inter- est of the Sheppard-Towner Act. Many Activities She was one of the directors of the American Child - Health association, member-at-large of the World's Dairy Congress, a director of the Woman's City club, Illinois Children's Home and Aid society, the Chicago Urban league, and chairman of the child welfare committee of the Chicago Council of Social Agencies.
