WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1923 FETE ATTRACTS T0 NEW TRIER Christmas Program Enjoyed by Many Residents Sunday, December 16, was a red- letter day in the history of New Trier. On this occasion the school was host to its friends in the township at the first community Christmas celebration, and a good many friends there are indeed ; for the school auditorium was filled to overflowing. Formerly, dur- ing the holiday season, Christmas carols were given by the Music de- partment, but this year the whole student body co-operated in present- ing what friends of the school feel was a most appropriate and beautiful program. . An artistic presentation of the story of the Nativity opened the program. The success of a play of this character depends mainly upon the simplicity of the presentation and the sincerity ex- pressed by the actors in their roles. These qualities were highly empha- sized in this performance. Another outstanding feature of the play lays in the highly artistic atmosphere, which was created by the simple, but digni- fied setting, effective lighting, and ap- propriate costuming. One of our friends in the audience was heard tof: say, "It might not be unusual to have a play like this in church, but it is very unusual to see it in a school." Reception in Mess Hall After the play, a reception, at which refreshments were served, was held in the new mess hall. This reception gave the guests of the school an op- portunity to meet the faculty and students. It was highly fitting that the mess hall should. be opened with the first community Christmas gather- ing. The school is most proud of its spacious, well-equipped hall, which appeared to great advantage for its holiday regalia. The last part of the program was divided into various musical selections, the outstanding one of which was a cantata, "The Story of Christmas," by H. Alexander Matthews. This was composed of over 300 boys' and girls' voices, beautifully blended. Assisting this multitude of choristers were Miss Irma Moschel, soprano; Miss Wait, contralto; Ridgway Daggy, tenor; and Kurtis Brownell, baritone, all of whom added greatly to the success of the cantata. As for the glee clubs, they are to be especially congratu- lated upon the artistic shading in all their numbers, and upon their fine "team work." These qualities, were due mostly to the faithful diligence of Mrs. Homer E. Cotton and her as- sistant, Miss Armstrong.
