" Sr ia WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1923 3 NEW MOVIE HALL T0 OPEN JAN. 4 "Smilin' Through" to Be Opening Day Film The new auditorium at Community House for motion picture and theatri- cal performances, might well be called the Little theatre of Winnetka. On the opening night, Friday, January 4, a program of unusual interest will be pre- sented featuring Mrs. June Wilson Thrall, a north shore artist well known on the Chicago stage, in a prologue to the feature picture, "Smilin" Through." The New Trier High School Trio, con- sisting of George Swigart, Estelle Swigart and Frances Anderson, will ap- pear in special musical numbers. The musical interpretations for the picture will be rendered by Pauline Pettibone. "Smilin" Through," starring Norma Talmadge, has been chosen for the opening night because it is generally conceded to be among the best pictures ever produced. Few great plays have been brought to the screen with such splendor as is here present. Artistry is everywhere apparent, in acting, in di- rection and in the unique settings which have been chosen for this dramatic pro- duction. The two principle players, Norma Talmadge and Harrison Ford, have dual roles. They are Monyeen and Jeremiah of the last generation, whose fatal love is brought to a happier con- clusion in the affection of Kathleen and Kenneth Wayne of today. Wyndham Standing presents a very agreeable characterization as John Carteret. Latest Mechanism The management is happy to announce that the opening of the Little theatre affords an opportunity for artistic and finished productions such as have been impossible heretofore in Winnetka. Two of the latest type Simplex projection machines are being installed together with a dissolving stereopticon and spot lights. Another improvement is the el-\ imination of flicker on the screen, due to the use of alternating current, by the installation of a motor generator set, such as is used in the larger Chicago theaters, for producing a direct current. The electrically operated ventilating sys- tem assures a constant and sufficient supply of fresh air and the improved method for dimming lights affords com- forts and conveniences not hitherto en- joyed. Shows at 7 and 9 Attention is directed to the change in time of shows necessitated by the spe- cial musical and theatrical numbers which will be presented during January and February. Commencing next Fri- day, evening shows will start at 7 and 9. Children, unless accompanied by and seated with adults, are requested to at- tend the Friday afternoon show at 4:15 instead of the evening performances. Tuesday Shows Beginning Tuesday, January 8 motion pictures will be presented consisting, for the present, of feature films and short subjects designed to provide restful en- tertainment.
