WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1923 SYMPHONY DOES ITSELF PROUD Soloists Also Give Brilliant Performance The novel feature of the concert given by the Little Symphony orches- tra last Monday evening in New Trier Assembly hall was the singing of ex- cerpts from Handel's "Messiah" by a quartet of very well-known soloists. It was well received by the audience, perhaps it will seem good to the man- agement to present another similar program later in the season. The first number was the lovely Pastorale from Bach's Christmas Symphony, charmingly played by the strings alone. Many a listener must have felt himself to be with those for- tunate shepherds of old, as he heard the simple, quaint strains. After the Pastorale the entire orchestra present- ed the greatest of all of Mozart's symphonies, familiarly known as the "Jupiter." An extract from the pro- gram notes added to the intérest aroused by this famous composition. "Mozart composed forty-nine sym- phonies--the first one in London in 1764, when he was only eight years old. His three greatest symphonies were not written, however, until the year 1788, within a space of two months' time. The C Major, or "Jupiter" symphony, the latest of the three, and generally conceded the greatest, was completed by Mozart within the amazingly short time of fifteen days." The second half of the program was the before-mentioned singing of the "Messiah" excerpts. The singers were Anna Burmeister, soprano; Mary Welch, contralto; FEugene Dressler, tenor; Burton Thatcher, bass. The solos, and one quartet number, were artistically delivered, Mr. Thatcher being called upon to repeat his ren- dition of "Why do the nations so furiously rage together?" Just here there might be occasion for the query as to whether there are any subscrib- ers who would prefer a purely in- strumental program. The date of the next concert January 22. Note the change. Choral Society Lauded At Annual Carol Fest The recently organized Winnetka Choral society, sponsored by the Village Improvement association, made its first public appearance on Christmas FEve, when it led in the singing at the Com- munity Carol service held under the brilliantly lighted tree on the Village Common. Many villagers attended the service and the Choral society was enthusiastic- ally applauded. The service was one of the most successful in the history of the village, despite the fact that the longed- for background of snow was lacking to enhance the spirit of the season. is Alumni Vs. Varsity In North Shore Basketball Every year during the Christmas time the "grand old Alums" of the North Shore Country Day school man- age to 'scare up" a basketball team to pit against the finest of the present aggregation of cagers in the school. The aggregations hooked up as usual Thursday morning of this week before a record crowd of "rooters." ANOTHER WINNETKAN BREAKS INTO PRINT Many months ago a well known magazine of wide circulation through- out the country published an interest- ing interview with J. W. F. Davies, director of Winnetka Community House, relative: to the workings of that great community enterprise. Not long ago another magazine quoted Frederick Edson Clerk, Super- intendent of New Trier Township High school concerning his very in- teresting work. in his former field at Winchester, Va. Now we find Collier's magazine publishing a series of interviews with Carleton W. Washburne, superintend- ent of the Winnetka Public schools, bearing on the general subject of the Individual system of instruction and Mr. Washburne's extremely interest- ing tour of investigation of special educational systems in Furopean countries. The articles contain information and accounts of incidents in Mr. Wash- burne's tour which have been heard at first hand by many residents who have iattended meetings of the .Parent- Teacher association at which he spoke. And, still, one reads these articles with a sense of pride, because there is nothing quite as thrilling, perhaps as "seeing" one of your neigh- bors in print in one of the great national publications. Even though Winnetkans are getting into print with encouraging frequency the pleas- ant reaction among their neighbors is none the less potent. Appropriating a cleaver from the kitchen they proceeded to pry open a desk from which the money was taken. While several envelopes in the drawer were opened and the con- tents scattered on the desk, those con- taining liberty bonds were untouched. The cash register was left undisturbed. After taking the cigars, candy and the supply of meat, the culprits left by way of the rear door, being careful to lock it securely in their departure.
