' WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 1924 17 "OPERA COMPANY ONTOUR SOON Many Cities to be Visited by Chicago Company Chicago's greatest advertising medium, The Civic Opera company, will make a national tour of 10,000 miles at the close of the opera season in Chicago, January 26 and, in a period of eight weeks will present grand opera in sev- enteen cities, it was announced this week by the management. The national tour this year will be one of the most extensive the company has undertaken, and the most intensive. The itinerary includes cities from Bos- ton in the east, to Houston in the south, to San Francisco on the Paciflc coast. Two Special Trains Two special trains will be required to transport the company, its scenery, properties and other equipment when the Opera leaves Chicago the last Satur- day night of the current season. Approximately 225 people, or more, will be aboard the trains. Baggage cars are used to transport equipment, and it is so complete that the technical director, Harry W. Beatty, is able in an emergency to set his stage in theatres and auditoriums that boast of nothing in stage equipment but electric current for lighting. C. A. Shaw, manager of the tour, has completed arrangements for the ap- pearance of the company in Boston, the first city in the itinerary. The tour will be in charge of H. M. Johnson, assis- tant to the president, Mr. Shaw and Mr. Beatty. : The company will fill an engagement in Boston commencing January 28 and ending February 9. From Boston the company will entrain for Cleveland, thence to Pittsburgh, to Detroit, to Cin- cinnati, to Chattanooga, to Tulsa, Hous- ton, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, Witchita. The tour will end in Kansas City March 22. Fourteen operas will be presented in Boston. The tour repertoire in other cities will consist chiefly of "Boris Godunoff," by Moussorgsky, "Mefis-1 tofele}" by Boito, "The Jewess," by Halevy, and "Cleopatre," by Massenet. Feodor Chaliapin will have the title role in "Boris Godunoff," and will ap- pear with Edith Mason in "Mefistofele," Mme. Rosa Raisa, dramataic soprano, will be the Rachel of "The Jewess," one of her most famous roles, and Charles Marshall the Eleazar. Mary Garden will be appearing in "Cleopatre." Mme. Claudia Muzio, dramatic so- prano, will appear in Boston and in Cleveland, and instead of continuing with the company, will go to Havana, Cuba, to fill an engagement, later to Mexico City before returning next fall to Chicago. Myrna Sharlow, Alice D'Hermanoy, Lucie Westen, Kathryn Browne, Maria Claessens, Forrest Lamont, Angelo Minghetti, Jose Mojica, Harry Steier, Georges Baklanoff, Giacomo Rimini, Desire Defrere, William Beck, Gildo Morelato, Alexander Kipnis, Virgilio lazzari are numbered among the artists who will make their appearance on the national tour. Practically the entire company will go to Boston for the fortnight's engagement there. Polacco Wields Baton Musical Director Giorgio Polacco and Conductor Ettore Panizza will wield the baton on the company's coast to coast jaunt. The premiere danseuse of .the com- pany, Miss Anna Ludmila, and the Civic Opera ballet will be with the company throughout the tour. Miss Ludmila's dancing will be a feature of many of the performances. Observers state that the Chicago Civ- ic Opera well deserves the title of Chi- cago's greatest advertising medium.
