WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1924 WINNETKA MEN AT FRAT FEST J. M. Coulter and C. J. East- man Leaders in Interfra- ternity Club Plan HOLD DINNER FEB. 7 Plan $3,000,000 Building in Chicago Names of several Winnetka men ap- pear prominently in connection with the announcement of the seventh annual in- formal dinner of the Interfraternity Association of Chicago to be held in the Crystal ballroom of the Blackstone hotel Thursday evening, February 7, at 6:45 o'clock. Supervising the general program for the dinner is J. M. Coulter, 1055 Chat- field road, president of the Chicago association, who will have the assist- ance of Charles J. Eastman, chairman of the Reception committee whose home is at 984 Cherry street, and other fra- ternity leaders in Chicago and vicinity. "Dick" Little There The toastmaster for the evening will be Richard Henry Little, of Phi Delta Theta, and among the speakers will be General Nathan William MacChesney of Phi Kappa Psi, Henry T. Thomas, President of the New York association of Zeta Psi, and George Banta, Phi Delta Theta, the editor of Banta's Greek Exchange. . The plans for an interfraternity club- house similar to "The Interfraternity clubs" of New York have been com- pleted and will be discussed at the din- ner by 'the architect in charge. This club is being built by private capital so that it will be necessary for The Inter- fraternity Association of Chicago to act merely in an advisory capacity. In commenting on the {forthcoming dinner, Mr. Coulter says: "It is probable that there is a greater number of fraternity men in proportion to the total population in Winnetka and adjoining suburbs than in any other lo- cality in the Middle West and it occurs to me that there will be quite general interest here in the forthcoming dinner. Mrs. Ralph M. Snyder Loses Mother by Death Mrs. W. N. Eaton of Jackson, Mich., passed away last Wednesday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Mon- roe Snyder of 1311 Asbury avenue, Hubbard Woods. Rev. James A. Richards, pastor of the Winnetka Congregational church, conducted brief services at the Snyder residence on Friday. Burial was at Jackson, Mich. Mrs. Eaton is survived by her daugh- ter and two sons, Ross Eaton of Chi- cago and Paul Eaton of Detroit. : NEW $9,000 HOME A permit was issued from the Win- netka Village office this week to Harold G. Wilson to erect a new $9,000 resi- dence at 475 Fir street. The house will be a two-story frame structure. MOTOR POLICE BRAVE COLD; NAB SPEEDERS Patrolling the streets in spite of the bad weather, Winnetka motorcycle police sprang surprises on half a dozen speed- ers this week and thereby materially en- hanced the village treasury. Most of the arrests were made on Sheridan road where the motorists have a tendency to "open up" when they are in a hurry. Among those booked in the Village court on speeding charges were: D. P. Wells, 1315 Forest avenue, Evanston; Roland Crowe, 2027 Orrington avenue, Evanston; D. Hagenmayer, 3903 Kil- patrick avenue, Chicago; Elmer Kuy- berg, 242 Gillette avenue, Waukegan; Morris Reicheldt, 1328 Elmwood ave- nue, Wilmette, and L. A. Gorman, 70 W. Monroe street, Chicago. Wells was fined $15 and costs; and the others were to be arrainged the last part of the week. Other activities of the Winnetka po- lice this week included the arrest of Ed. Skirttie, a plasterer, whose address was given as 1723 Lyons street, Evanston, on a charge of drunkenness and tres- passing at the home of A. U. Magnus, 655 Sheridan road. Skirttie furnished $25 bond to appear for trial today. Last Wednesday Stella Drummond, who gave her address as Evanston, was arrested on a charge of parking an auto- mobile without lights on Winnetka avenue, Winnetka's Health Is Very Good This Winter Fear of any unusual prevalence of small pox, typhoid fever, chicken pox and other diseases in Winnetka this win- ter were dismissed this week by a re- port of the Village health commissioner, Dr. C. O. Schneider. According to his record there are con- siderably fewer cases of contagious dis- eases now than is usual at this time of year. In other winters at this time as many as 100 or 150 cases of contagion have been reported, he said. This year only about sixty have been reported to date. Considering the recent damp and cold weather this report is encouraging and shows that the health of the community 1s excellent. Advertising Does Pay, Says This Young Woman The classified advertising columns of Winnetka Talk came in good stead for a young woman seeking employment as a helper in a home, An advertisement was inserted in last Saturday's issue and nine helpers had been received before noon of the date of issue. Fourteen additional replies were received in the course of the next few days. The girl found a most satisfactory position at a total cost of forty cents. "Who says it doesn't pay to adver- tise?" she writes in commenting on her happy experience.
