Mr. Cushing Smith is a practicing landscape architect and town plan- ning engineer with offices in Chicago and Wilmette. He is a graduate of Cornell university, Ithaca, N. Y., with the degree of Bachelor of Science, where he specialized in landscape architecture and in architecture, and he later received the degree of Master of Landscape Architecture from Har- vard university, where he specialized in town and city planning. Wins National Honors In 1913, the plans prepared by Mr. Cushing Smith for the platting of a tract-of land of 550 acres, in a national competition held under auspices of the National Conference on City Planning, were one of four sets to be especially mentioned and published. In the following year, as the only medal and honorable mention in the International Competition for the re- planning of Dublin, Ireland. He has designed and laid out the grounds about many private homes and country estates, has de- signed golf courses and country clubs, modern cemeteries, real estate sub- divisions of all types, public institution grounds, parks and park systems, playgrounds, "university and school grounds, and has prepared detailed plans and comprehensive reports cov- ering city and town planning for many communities in various sections of the He has been retained by large corporations in the preparation of industrial housing projects, provid- ing accommodations for many thou- sands of workmen, plans which in- clude all architectural and engineer- ing problems. He recently designed a summer resort of over 400 acres with its myriad recreation facilities. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago and is also prominently identified with the American Society of Landscape Architects. For one year, he was associated with Mr. Ross Crane in connection with The Better Homes Institute of The Art Institute of Chicago. He is almost constantly in demand for lectures on subjects relating to landscape architecture, town planning and architecture. His addresses, as will be in the articles in WINNETKA TALK are full of practical suggestions which can be applied to personal, individual problems as they relate to the design and arrangement of the home and the development and planting of the grounds about the residence however tiny they may be.
