Th, ~/ + WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 1, 1924 New Trier Journalists Attend High School Many Schools Represented at Galesburg Session Last Week The New Trier High school was represented Thursday and Friday of last week at the third annual conven- tion of the Illinois High School Press association held at Galesburg. The I. H. S. P. A. was organized two years ago for the purpose of afford- ing high school publications a means ot exchanging ideas and an opportun- ity for greater sociability. Members of this organization are at all times able to ask for and receive sugges- tions concerning journalistic prob- lems, and can also keep in touch with the innovations, merits, or faults of other papers. Once every winter a conference is held at Knox college in Galesburg. To this conference are in- vited one or more delegates from each school publication. Talks by well known newspaper or magazine writers and discussion sessions make such con- ventions quite interesting and instruc- tive. In addition to the Illinois High School Press association there are many others in various parts of the country. The New Trier News, which is the student organ at New Trier High school, is a member of both the - local organization and of the Central Interscholastic Press association, with headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin. Through these two sources the News ' 1ble to keep in touch with development and progress of the many hich school papers in the Middle West. Business Manager There At the recent convention in Gales- burg the New Trier News was rep- resented by its business manager, Daniel Brower. He attended the sev- eral talks which were given during the two days of tne meeting and brought back a report of the proceed- ings to the News staff. Upon their arrival at Galesburg the delegates were taken to Knox college and registered. They were then as- Press Convention signed to various fraternity or sorority houses, which were to serve as their quarters for the duration of their stay. As soon as these preliminaries were concluded the visitors went to the Galesburg club, where luncheon was served by the Sigma Delta Chi frater- nity. Immediately afterwards an address was heard from S. S. McClure, editor and publisher of McClure's magazine, and a graduate of Knox college in the class of '82. He told his listeners of the great help he had received from his contact with people both during and after his days is school. This enabled him to put out a mag- azine which appealed to the public. for it had a human touch. Following this talk Mr. Whipple, editor of the Galesburg Evening Mail, extended to all delegates the privilege of visiting his plant. Hear Eastern Journalist At 4 o'clock there was a journal- istic get-together in Seymour hall, at which John H. Finley, editor of the New York Times, spoke. In short, he 'said that those who throw them- selves into a task and accomplish it well, not because of expected salary but because of real love of the work and devotion to it, will certainly re- ceive a deserved reward. As an ex- ample he cited his own career. Only after 'thirty vears of striving was he able to attain his present high posi- tion. Another speaker was Professor Baker, who told the delegates some- thing about Annuals. That night the visitors were special ouests at the "All College Dance." Next morning Miss Ada Maskrey, teacher of journalism in the Galesburg High school, directed a round table discussion, at which the delegates talked over their difficulties and of- fered each other suggestions. After this conference hour Miss Mary Kin- navey, president of Theta Sigma Phi. the national journalistic sorority, ad- dressed the gathering i~ the growing possibilities for activity on the part of women in the field of journalism. Newspapers Influence In the afternoon Prof. F. W. Beck- man, head of the journalistic depart- ment at Iowa State college, talked on the service rendered to mankind by the newspaper. "The newspaper," he said substantially, "gives to the pub- lic the account of outside happenings, and so develops nationalism, molds opinion, and, next to schools, it is the great educator of the masses. Also, it breaks the isolation barriers which would otherwise surround small rural communities." Prof. Beckman added that the power held by the person in control of a newspaper is tremendous, and consequently should be used with the greatest care. As a closing event of the conven- tion the awards of honors were an- nounced. "News N'Everything," the weekly put out by Robinson High school of Robinson, Illinois, was ac- credited with having the best front page makeup of any papers submitted. In the Annual class the year: books of Rockford High school and of Mo- line High school were given the judges' decision.
