~ WINNETKA " WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1924 TAX CUT HELPS MOTOR PUBLIC Automobile Clubs Foresee Immense Saving "A saving of $25,000,000 annually to the motorists of the country, which will result from concurrence of the United States Senate with action of the House of Representatives on the war excise tax on motor vehicles provision of the revenue bill has been the direct result of the work of local automobile clubs affiliated with the American Automobile Association," said Mr. H. M. Brown, General Man- ager of the Chicago Motor club. The Chicago Motor club has had an active part in the fight for the relief which the House of Representatives has given and which we believe the Senate will also endorse. Fortunately our Congressmen have shown a ready willingness to come to the assistance of the motorists of the nation. "When Secretary of the Treasurer Mellon made his recommendations for reduction in taxes, no mention was made of the five per cent tax on auto- mobiles, tires, accessories and repair parts or motor trucks. The Ways and Means Committee of the House, large- ly adopted the Mellon recommenda- tions and when the tax bill was brought to the floor of the House there was still no mention of any relief for motorists. The American Automobile association has been con- tinuously on the job to secure some reduction if not the elimination of this tax. . Splendid cooperation was given by the local clubs in carrying on the campaign of information as to the discriminatory features of this war excise tax. Action of Congress in re- ducing the tax on tires. accessories, and repair parts from five per cent to two and a half per cent and the removal of the tax on the motor truck chassis, costing less than $1,000 was the result. "This action of Congress will give a very substantial relief to the farmer and business men who use a small truck in their business. All motorists will benefit by this reduction in the nuisance taxes on tires, accessories and repair parts. We are hopeful that the Senate will concur in this action." MOTOR CAR ADVICE The Kenilworth Motor company calls attention to the fact that motor- ists should see that their cars are well Froased, that wheels are in line, and in at radiators are flushed out. Water gas tanks is causing much trouble at present, and the use of good clean gasoline will help very much in les- sening the evil, it is explained. Nu- merous unsolicited letters commend- ing Cadillac service as well as a num- ber of personal expressions of satisfac- ticn have come to the office of the superintendent of the central station, 2301 South Michigan ave., and to the offices of the managers of the four Cadillac community branches. Under the standardized service charge system, the owner is appraised of the actual cost to him of all service work he authorizes before any of that work is started. He is met at the door of the service station by a tester who, after recommending the neces- sary service work, tells the owner what the amount of his bill will be. Upon receiving the owner's signature as authorization of that work, the car is sent to the shop. : Skilled Cadillac craftsmen,- special- ized experts in their own particular part of the service work, perform the necessary operations. These men com- plete the work in the minimum time consistent with the high standard re- quired. : When the job is completed the same tester who received the car from the owner takes it out for the final test, The owner is notified when his car is ready for him, When he arrives, the bill is waiting and he can pay it without any inconvenient delay, obh- tain the receipt and release for his car, and drive away immediately. This freedom from statements at the end of the month is appreciated by all the owners using the service stations, re- ports from satisfied patrons indicate. An added feature of protection to the owner's interest is a system of checking the recommended operations after the car has been sent up to the service shop. When additional work is found necessary, the owner is in- formed of its nature and cost by tele- phone. If he authorizes it, it is done. If he does not feel it necessary or de- sirable, it is not done.
