14 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 1924 Mystery Thickens! Tell Us; Kind Sir, What Can It Be? By OBSERVER Well, anyhow, that much is out! She's going to appear at Skokie school, Win- netka. For signs all over town say: "The Gay Adventuress is coming, May > ig 10, at Skokie School Memorial a ia " But, where does that get us? True, the strain in many a home was lessen- ed when it was learned that so reputable a place as the Skokie school was to house "The Gay Adventuress" during her stay on the north shore. And the fact that the Memorial hall is the larg- est in these diggin's means that there'll be a large crowd on hand--both on and off the stage. So, evidently, it is going to be a large event in our lives. But human curiosity is an insatiate thing; so thinking "What slick news- paper sleuths are we," we repaired to Carleton Washburne, Winnetka's genial school - superintendent. { Washburne Meets Her No luck !--for, "No," said Mr. Wash- burne "the students are not planning any activity for those nights. True, somebody scheduled our hall for the nights of May 9 and 10, and guaranteed to use it. Who was that somebody? Well, T remember she was a bit of fem- ininity fair to look upon, with a "come- hither" look in her eye. But when I asked her whom I should put down as the responsible party, she merely smil- ed and said: 'Just call me "The Gay Adventuress." " Who in the world can she be! The durndest tales are going 'round! F'rinstance, at Lee Adams' drug store, b'gosh, they do say it's nothing more than the North Shore Drama league busting into Winnetka again. Others gather around the stove say it must be at least as sparkling as a musical comedy. But here's the wildest! Our inform- ant, who prefers that his name remain unknown, avers that a bunch of "horse- nuts" from Chieftain, Montana, are on their way to the Louisville Derby, which is to be pulled off May 17. They have an eye to thrift--they make their way by doing stunts in school grounds, at the same time exhibiting the products of the thrift of Chieftain, Montana. And the expedition has so obsessed the denizens of Chieftain that the whole town de- cided to make "Louisville or bust." So, THE SAYINGS AND DOINGS OF SPEED OORY OF | 'p i7-\ .3.. Read the Want-Ads Most States Institute Motor Bus Regulations All of the states in the United States except six have taken official action in respect to the motor and jitney bus. This action has come through the in- creased use of motor busses as com- mon carriers using the public highways for their roadways. : In seventeen states, public utility com- missions have issued general orders gov- erning their operation, as it has been found that local or home rule failed in most cases. Through this official action the bus is rapidly finding its place not as a sub- stitute but as an ally to electric and steam transportation, to which it acts as a feeder. MILK THAT IS SAFE Contaminated milk is especially harmful during warm weather because disease germs, like other vegetation, grow more rapidly than when the temperature is low.
