WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 1924 z SPANISH TENOR IN CIVIC OPERA Antonio Cortis Engages for Season 1924-25 A young but experienced Spaniard who is well known and liked in the por- trayal of romantic roles in many opera centers as is Ditrichstein for his work on the American dramatic stage, has been engaged by the Chicago Civic Op- era Company for the 1924-25 season. He is Antonio Cortis, tenor, of Bar- celona, and he will make his American debut with the Chicago company at the Auditorium theatre next fall. Corts has been engaged for the entire season. His appearances will be in the Italian section of the repertoire. Cortis has been singing in opera in South and Central America, Cuba, Spain and Portugal. He is described by European corres- pondents as polished, suave, a veritable Don; the possessor of a fine stage pres- ence to match a voice, both pleasing and powerful. A matinee idol in many opera houses. He will sail for the United States early this fall, the management of the Chicago Civic Opera is informed. So That's Why It's Been Peaceful Along Spruce St. We hadn't heard about it, but there seems to be a genuine "Rinkydink" club right in the heart of Winnetka-- as, at second thought, one presumes there must be in every community where there are wideawake and, oc- casionally, mischievous boys. But here goes: "Winnetka, I1., April 15, 1924. Editor, WINNETKA TALK, Dear Sir: Please publish the following in "your next issue of the TALK. 'The Rinkydinks are at it again! The west end of Spruce street in turmoil ! 'Harold Runnfeldt, president and leader of the Rindydink club, who has been ill for the past 7 weeks, is well again and able to resume his duties. 'The club's activities have been at a standstill during his illness, but now, it will make up for lost time-- movies, baseball, socials, etc.' Sincerely, IL. M. RUNNFELDT, 1037 Spruce Street, Winnetka, Il." How Unenlightened These Notables Must Have Felt Diogenes never looked for a gas leak with his lantern. Moses never was perplexed about finding a parking place. Salome never had a chance to dance to jazz band music. Croesus never worried about his in- come tax return. Plato never considered the possibility of typhoid germs in unchlorinated water supply. Nero never had a chance to learn to play a saxophone. The Queen of Sheba never pondered over the fact that electricity which browns toast sometimes passes over a wire coated with ice and the current never melts the ice. Cleopatra never had a chance to talk to her many admirers by long distance telephone. The Roman Baths never had manu- factured gas service. Caesar never had to ride in a jitney bus.
