WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1924 WINNETKA GIRL HEALTH MODEL Edith Dillon Wins First Honors at N. U. For exceptional prowess in ath- letics and for all-round excellent health, Miss Edith W. Dillon, 814 Prospect avenue, Winnetka, this week won the silver cup for freshmen girls at Northwestern university. This is the second year of the award of health and athletic honors for freshmen girls and the ceremony took place in Fisk hall at chapel time. Dean Raymond A Kent in presenting the token to Miss Dillon, said that the United States needs healthier women and men more than anything else. He referred to the bad showing made by Amer- ican young men under examination for military service during the World war and urged all students not only to take proper exercise but to use the toothbrush three times a day. Miss Dillon's achievements as a freshman girl in athletics was read by Dean Kent and was loudy applauded by several hundred students who were present. In addition to her excellent record in pure health points the Winnetka girl scored heavily in the following sports during the current year: Hockel, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and varsity hockey. According to Miss Ger- trude Hawley, assistant professor of physical education and hygiene, Miss Dillon also made a high score in total strength and lung capacity. That Northwestern university girls are generally healthy was indicated by the fact that Miss Dillon 'didn't win her honors easily. There were many runners-up and the best of these were awarded purple chevrons by Dean Kent. "This contest," said Miss Hawley in her letter to Dean Kent, "has included all the freshman girls registered in Dr. Dorothy Grey's and my section in hygiene. This is the second year the award has been made and last year the cup was won by Iris Boulton. The chevrons are for the ten highest after the winner of the cup. It is customary for the girls to wear the chevrons on the left sleeve of the gym- nasium suit."
