WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 14, 1924 ETLAY FOR CRADLE BUDGET Little Theatre Players to Present "Officer 666" June 26 and 28 "HOMES FOR BABIES" Evanston Institution Places Many Infants Winnetka playgoers are to enjoy an unusual treat at Community House on the evenings of Thursday and Saturday, June 26 and 28, when the Winnetka Little Theatre players present the three- act melodrama, "Officer 666," as a bene- fit for the Cradle society. The play is given under the auspices of the Win- netka board of the society. Under the supervision of IL. L. Bu- chanan, a brilliant cast has been assem- bled for the presentation of Augustan McHugh's celebrated mystery drama that is counted among the greatest suc- cesses in the history of the American stage. Assisting Mr. Buchanan will be Nor- man W. Harris, stage manager, and John K. Coolidge, property man. The Cast The cast of characters will be as follows: Bateato, Japanese butler........ Beaman Another policeman ...Gilbert Scribner Located at Evanston The Cradle, for the benefit of which the play is given, is located at Evanston and is incorporated under the laws of Illinois. It was dedicated, March 10, 1923, and the first babies brought out on the following Monday. At that time the nursery was completely furnished and equipped for the care of eight babies. The staff consisted of a head day nurse, assistant nurse, night nurse, and combination cook and laundress. Dr. Mitchell was the pedriatrician in charge until January, and Dr. Luskie has been in charge since that time. The: babies come to the Cradle from hospitals, social service departments and physicians. Whenever it is possible, and in these cases it is almost always true, those in charge have personal in- terview with the mother of -the baby before accepting it. The Cradle, it 1s explained, is a nurs- ery to establish the physical fitness of little children to go into the homes of love and devotion. The first year's rec- ord shows that the average length of time in the Cradle is about 35 days. During the past year 81 babies were taken in, 65 of which have been adopted into permanent homes, three returned to their mothers with an assurance of ex- cellent care, one taken by its grand- mother, two sent to hospitals because of symptoms that precluded the possi- bilities of placing them, and three taken by death.
