WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 14, 1924 LEADER LAUDS LOCAL CHURCH Congregationalists Hear Sta- tistics from Prof. W. L. Bailey PRAISES FOR SCHOOLS Winnetka Spirit Also Comes In for Honors On Sunday afternoon, last, the com- mittee§ in charge of the 50th anniver- sary celebration of the Winnetka Con- gregational church, which will take place next October, were much inter- ested in a short talk made by Prof. W. IL. Bailey, professor of sociology at Northwestern university and a represen- tative of the Rockefeller Foundation which has spent much time and money in studying conditions among the church communities of the country. Ranks Among Best Prof. Bailey explained that their study of Winnetka took up some two hundred pages and had taken considerable time. He claimed that Winnetka's Community church is to be classed as being in the first two or three per cent of the best churches in America so far as the stan- dards of the Foundation are concerned and then hastened to add that not over one-third of all the people in Winnetka over ten years of age had any active connection with a religious body. Another significant remark made by him was to the effect that only one- half of the children under ten in Win- netka are receiving religious education. In both cases, however, the average is considerably higher than the average for the country. Praises Community House Prof. Bailey was outspoken in his praise of Community House, the Win- netka school system and the Winnetka spirit. He claimed that if the average growth of the village continued there would be a population of 17,000 in fif- teen years. He also informed his lis- teners that 22% of Winnetka's popula- tion is foreign born or colored. In connection with this talk there were committee reports concerning the 50th Anniversary celebration. As tenta- tively outlined, the program for the week of October 19 to 26 will include special exercises by the Men's class, the Church Sunday school and the Woman's society. The latter organization will maintain open house all week in the "Hostess room" at Community House and will operate a sight-seeing bus each morning during the week for visitors. On one evening during the week the historical committee will present an en- tertainment and on two other evenings there will be given a spectacular pageant which is now being prepared under the direction of Mrs. Sherman Goble and Mrs. B. F. Langworthy. Banquet to Feature There will also be a banquet on one of the evenings at which the attendance is expected to tax the capacity of the available space. The Church Sunday school will have a processional parade on October 19, marching to the site of the first church at Maple and Cherry streets where Frank Windes will speak; then to the site of the second church on Elm street, west of Maple, where Charles Eastman will speak.
