WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 5, 1924 20 op Announced Eight new body models on a chassis of 114-3/8 inch wheel base, embodying a new six-cylinder valve-in-head engine with a three-inch bore and 4%-inch stroke, is the sensational announcement made by the Buick Motor company. The new six-cylinder model is to be known as the Standard Six. The body models will consist of a five-passenger double-service sedan; a two-passenger roadster; a two-passenger enclosed roadster with heater; a five- passenger touring; a five-passenger en- closed touring with heater; a two-pas- senger coupe. Probably the most strik- ing features of the new models are the completely enclosed sedan and coupe on the open cars, and the low-pressure tires on all models. The cars with the en- closed tops will carry heaters. The tops and sides are so designed that they har- Anonize well with the distinctive body lines, They are upholstered with leather, with special cushion springs effecting a high degree of motoring comfort. Other models are furnished with uphol- stery of durable cloth in pleasing colors. The engine is a valve-in-head type with automatic lubrication throughout and with the cylinder head removable. The clutch and transmission form in- tegral parts of the engine which is sus- pended at three points from the main frame. The crank shaft is a drop-forg- ing, extra heavy and balanced with four large bearings. The pistons and con- necting rods are properly weighted and carefully manufactured. Large valves are operated noiseless, adjustable push rods through rocker arms which are automatically lubricated from the engine. The engine produces fifty actual break horse-power. The carburetor is the improved auto- matic float-feed type, supplied by vac- uum system from the gasoline tank mounted on the rear of the frame. Au- tomatic heat control insures proper va- porization at all speeds. The air regu- lator and choke buttons are on the in- strument board. Ignition is supplied by the -high ten- sion jump spark system, the current be- ing supplied by storage batteries and Delco electric generator. The spark ad- vances automatically. The starter is a complete Delco single-unit system for starting, lighting and ignition, built as an integral part of the engine and oper- ating in conjunction with the large stor- age battery. Combination switch with ammeter and automatic circuit breaker is found on the instrument board. The clutch is a multiple disc, dry plate, requiring but slight pressure to operate. It is very smooth in engagement and very positive in action, and the adjust- ment is particularly simple. The transmission is the selective slid- ing gear type, three speeds forward and one reverse. The gears are special and heat treated. There is positive inter- locking hand control so easy to operate that the gears can be shifted with the tips of the fingers. The steering gear is of improved semi-irreversible split bronze nut and steel worm with large adjustable ball bearings to take up wear. Steering wheel 17 inches in diameter, short spark and throttle levers in center of steer- ing wheels. Horn button on top of steering post. The frame is of re-inforced pressed steel channel, section, exceptionally stiff and deep side members. Four heavy cross members, integral gasoline tank support and spare tire carrier. The front springs are semi-elliptic type. The rear, cantilever type, both being exceptionally long, especially heat- treated, and adapted for each body type. Tops on open cars have a new de- sign quarter curtain, made of special wa- ter-proof fabric. Inside operating side curtains open with doors. Models with bermanent tops, sides enclosed by glass windows adjustable for ventilation. En- closed models with stationary type tops with windows adjustable. Models 24, 24-A, 25, 25-A, have two- piece ventilating type windshield with inside operating, -adjustable friction stops to hold glass in position. These models are equipped with cowl ventilators and windshield wiper. All closed models equipped with sunshade, automatic wind- shield wiper, new style one-piece wind- shield easily raised or lowered for ven- tilation by handle in similar manner to windows. All the models have been equipped with drip pan for the carburetor, and completly insulated wiring, which, with the attention to other details approved by the insurance underwriter's labora- tories, entitle Buick owners to the low- est rate for fire and theft insurance. As standard equipment on all models are carried dim and full headlights with anti-glare lenses. Parking lights on cowl, tail lamp and instrument board lamp, motor driven horn, seventy-five mile speedometer, gasoline gauge, tire carrier with extra demountable rim, jack, new type high pressure grease gun, full kit of tools, pump, tire repair kit, transmission lock, cowl or windshield type ventilator, rear vision mirror, run- ning board, scuff plates, new sunshade and dome light on all closed models, windsheild wiper, automatic windsheild wiper on all closed models. "The windshield becomes a diffusing lens," says the bulletin issued by the club. "Each particle of dust, being partly transparent, serves to diffuse or bend a light ray, and the result is that the man who looks through the wind- shield at an approaching headlight im- agines that he is the victim of some- one else's carelessness. The truth is that the glare is largely his own fault. "There is so much rainy weather during the spring that the motorist seldom encounters this situation, but with the coming of dry summer weather and long distance touring over all kinds of roads he is very likely to have the windshield covered with dust as night approaches and never notice it. A good plan is to take a moment to dust off the windsheild whenever lights are turned on, repeating the process at intervals during the eve- ning's drive if the course is over dusty roads. A clean windshield will also obviate a lot of sun glare in day- time, minimizing the possibility of an accident as a consequence. When the paint wears off your house, or it is a little old fashined, do you trade it in on a new one--and take a 50% or 75% loss? You do not! Paint, and perhaps a little remodeling, are cheaper. What about your cars? The principle is exactly the same. The only reason that many people "trade in for a new car is because they are "talked into it." To get the full value out of your house or your car you must come pretty close to wearing them out. We will paint and trim your car in modern style, that often outshines the new ones, at prices that make the loss of a trade-in look like throwing money away.
