Bas. WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 12, 1924 11 'LA TRAVIATA' SCORES NICELY Tokatyan, Basiola and Pareto Applauded BY J. T.... Armand Tokatyan made his first ap- pearance with the Ravinia Park Opera company in "La Traviafa" Tuesday evening, July 8. His Alfredo Germont was pleasing. His earnest- ness in rendering the love songs with Violetta brought the "moon" days to the audience as is seldom done. Even when he makes a public scene after he meets Violetta with a new man, Alfredo is not neglected. Mario Basiola was the pet of the evening with the audience. His ex- planation and pleasing song to Vio- letta in the second act brought "Bra- vo" from several listeners. It was a strong appeal that even a person not knowing a single word of Italian could feel the strength of. A charming Violetta, from the open- ing scene in the salon of her own home when she meets with Alfredo, who has come to Paris to make his fortune, until her death scene, there is hardly a moment that she is on the stage that we have a feeling that she is not part of us. Graziella Pareto goes through the part in fine manner, except her death scene which appear- ed a little abrupt. Verdi's "La Traviata" will be re- peated Sunday evening, July 13. By that time Armand Tokatyan will prob- ably have recovered more fully, and he no doubt, will be able to reach some of the high notes he slipped over at this performance. The program for the coming week brings several new pieces. "Fedora," which in the opinion of many, was one of the best operas given at Ravinia, will be sung Tuesday evening, July 15. "Romeo and Julie" will have a showing Wednesday, July 16. "Car- men" has been placed for Thursday, July 17. On Friday evening, July 18, "L'Am- ore Dei Tre Re" will be an attraction that many music lovers have been waiting for this season. "The Secret of Suzanne" and "Pagliacci" will both be sung Saturday, July 19. The Sun- day evening rendition will be "The Barber of Seville." '| Buick Sales, Service ~ Station Opens Here Leonard A. James, one of the most successful automobile salesmen of the country, and among the best informed men in all the departments of that in- dustry, has opened a Buick sales and service station at 1141 Greenleaf avenue, Wilmette, where he will display a com- plete line of the Buick factory's products. Previous to associating himself with the Buick people, Mr. James was a lead- ing salesman on the Cadillac Motor com- pany's staff in the Evanston branch. Up to June 1, this year, at which time he relinquished his position with the Cadillac people to join the Buick forces, Mr. James stood in first place among the Cadillac sales- men and last year the volume of his busi- ness put him in 9th place in competition with all the automobile salesmen of the nation. The Wilmette Buick showrooms and service station will be kept open every week day until 9 o'clock P. M. and dur- ing the mornings on Sundays. Mr. James is making his home at 922 Oak street, Winnetka.
