WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 26, 1924 Stormy Days Recall to Mind Good Old Days in Homeland Editor's mote: --Accompanying is the first of a series of brief articles sub- mitted by a member of the editorial staff of .the Lloyd Hollister, Inc., publications who is making an extended tour of Eng- land and the Continent. Articles will ap- pear from time to time as they are re- ceived by letier from across the waters: By P. B. K. Off Newfoundland ' Today, Monday, in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence off Newfoundland, and only last Thursday in Chicago we boarded the Overseas Express bound for Montreal. Which goes to *show that if one wants to travel he must start. With 500 other humans we are steaming northeasterly on the short route to Liverpool. The sunlit sap- phire sea, touched here and there with the foam of breaking waves, meets the sky of paler blue in one huge con- tinuous ring. In this floating hotel called the "Douc" all things work together for the good of the passengers. Every new day shows new comforts and conveniences. Three meals a day with bouillon served on deck in the fore- noon and tea with wafers in the after- noon. Our little stateroom is a marvel of completeness and compactness. Nickel-plated hooks and holders of various kinds invite employment. The company even furnishes coathangers. An orchestra of five pieces gives concerts three times daily. In the lounge books and music are furnished to all who will come and get them. ficiently. Next Sunday we shall be in Liver- pool, and soon after we shall be walk- ing down' the pleasant lanes of FEng- land. : "A Nice Breeze" Passing - Cape Race, the southeast tip of Newfoundland and the goodbye outstretched hand of the New World, we struck rough weather. A north- east gale pounced upon us, and very soon, under the joint assault of wind and wave _the staunch liner began pitching and rolling. This was early Tuesday, July 8. The passengers, almost without ex- ception, arose as usual and break- fasted as usual. The boat was rolling, but what of it? Had they not armed themselves against discomfort by tak- ing all the well known precautionary measures? So they wrapped them selves warmly and stretched out in their steamer chairs. But feet and hands began to chill, and walking seemed desirable, so round and round promenaded enterprising couples. In vain. The dreaded moment came, and with it disgust and despair. One by one the sick folk went below and got what little comfort they could from pillow and mattress. Appetites fled. Was it for that they had left the solid stationary soil? All Tuesday night the unwelcome wind continued. Even today, Wed- nesday, it is heaping up the great waters, and the dining tables are still deserted. We suggested to a friendly tar that the weather was rather stormy. "O Gymnasium, barber-shop, hospital and |no!" said he cheerily, "just a nice, nursery perform their functions ef-!stiff sailing breeze!" various swimming contests through- WILMETTE'S OWN SWIM HERO DUE HOME SOON Robert D.
