WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 26, 1924 It's Mrs. Skeeter Who Does All the Biting, Film Shows Mr. Mosquito, although far more for- midable in personal aspect than Mrs. Mosquito, is quite harmless; his wife and daughters alone have the bite. Information blazoned on a film in the auditorium of Community House, Wed- nesday night, gave that tip to the world. Say, folks, if that's true, Wednesday evening was a regular field day (or night) for the wimmin skeeters, for the "biters" came there in swarms, armed not with rolling pins, but with pitch- forks. The writer was there and he hasn't forgotten the experience yet. The meeting was originally intended as a mass outpouring to discuss ways and means to drive the pests from the vil- lage, but the publicity agent forgot his job, hence not more than 50 persons were present. What the gathering lack- ed in numbers, however, was more than offset by the interest which Dr. Harry W. Moore and Messrs Charles L. Byron and John C. Cobb, jr., contributed to the proceedings. All three spoke in the most derogatory terms of the whole mosquito family and every time some one in the audience felt the sting of Mrs. Mosquito, the victim inwardly cheered the speaker. In addition to the oratory, Dr. Moore produced a few reels of film which demn- onstrated that any wise mosquito will sing "Home, Sweet Home" at the sight of a rain barrel about a house and that it never passes up an opportunity to es- tablish its permanent residence in such a place. Probably next to the rain bar- rel there is no spot more congenial for its breeding ground than an old tin can partially filled with water and lying any- where on the lot. Pools also are favor- ite mosquito rendevous and oft-times a low shrub in a damp place tickles the mosquito fancy as an ideal homesite. Dr. Moore urged his auditors to go home and learn if their property held out any such inducements for a mosquito cclony and in the event that it did, to begin ex- termination operations at once. Another anti-mosquito gathering is scheduled at the Community House next Wednesday evening. It is advisable, however, so Dr. Moore says, to warn all persons subject to the "heebie jee- bies" to keep away from the mosquito screen. Former Winnetkan Opens Sanitarium on the Coast Word reaches WinnETkA TAL from Robert A Fischer, formerly of Winnetka, describing the ideal conditions surround- ing the sanitarium for tubercular people he has established in the Verdugo Hills, about 15 miles from Los Angeles, known as the Crescenta Sanitarium, incot- porated. "This s-nitarium," Mr. Fischer ex- plains, "is located nearly 2,000 feet above sea level. From the pergola on the grounds one commands a view that can scarcely be duplicated as the Verdugo Hills are just 2,000 feet from the place and covered with evergreens, live oaks and other verdure. In another direction one commands a view of the Sierra Madre mountains which form a fitting background for the 186 live oak trees on this seven-acre tract." "I believe 1 have found the place where tubercular people can be cured," Mr. Fischer continues, "provided the cases are not advanced too far. Every- thing is done to make the patients com- fortable and they are in the care of especially trained nurses." "Climatic conditions," he concludes, "are second to none on earth. During the summer months an east wind pre- vails continually, just mild enough to make things comfortable. In the winter months Ia Crescenta is the heaven of the United States." Julia, Your Friend Ted Didn't Get That Letter "Julia," pleads Postmaster Elmer E. Adams, "won't you please call at the post office and get that special delivery letter you mailed to Ted sometime ago? It went all the way to the Dead Letter office at Washington and came all the way back and--well, this is the last call, that's all. Put in formal language, Postmaster Adams writes with the request that WINNETKA TALK publish, as follows: "The postmaster at Winnetka is hold- ing a letter returned from the Dead Letter office, endeavoring to find the sender.
