WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 9, 1924 A fternoon Musical a Sunday Feature at Indian Hill Club NDIAN Hill is introducing a Sun- day afternoon musical for the first time this week. At five o'clock in the afternoon, Miss Helen Freund and Harold Tyres will appear in con- cert, with Troy Sanders at the piano. Helen Freund, a brilliant young coloratura soprano, is a protege of Mary Garden, and has been engaged by the Chicago Civic Opera company for next season. She will make her debut as "Sophie" in "Werther" with Miss Garden, and will also sing other important roles. Miss Freund has a voice of very lovely quality, and a charming per- sonality. She has appeared as soloist with the Civic Orchestra, Frederick Stock conducting, with the Little Symphony Orchestra, Finston's Or- chestra, and in many concerts and re- citals at various clubs. Harold Ayres has been pronounced by leading music critics, as "one of the best young American violinists now before the public." He has studied under such masters as Sametini, Knei- sel, Sevcik and Auer. He made his first public appearance at the age of six, and since then has met with great success in all parts of the United States. During this past season he has played in many concerts with Charles Marshall of the Civic Opera company and has many important en- gagements for the coming year. Leopold Auer has said that Harold Ayres is the most gifted American pupil who has come to him. Those at- tending will notice that changes have been made in the lighting of the out- of-door platform to make it even more alluring, and Benson's orchestra will furnish the music. ---- Dr. and Mrs. J. W. F. Davies and their son, Gould, are spending the month of August motoring in the east. They plan to visit relatives in Pitts- field, Mass., and Boston, and may be able to spend a few days with Mrs. George Gordon at Dark Harbor, Maine, returning to Lundington, Michigan, by the first of September. --d Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Zimmerman, 337 Sheridan road, are passing this week-end with Mrs. Kinney at St. Joseph, Michigan. Miss Helen Shurtleff will marry C. Dean Klahr of Clarion, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening, September 6, at the residence of her father, Wilford C. Shurtleff, 815 Lake avenue, Wil- mette. A wedding supper will be served to the guésts at the close of the service which the Rev. Gilbert Stansell will read at 8:30 o'clock. Miss Shurtleff has chosen as her Miss Helen Shurtleff two attendants, her sisters, Mrs. John C. Campbell and Mrs. Munroe Cole. William Motter of New York City will serve as Mr. Klahr's best man. A number of parties are being planned for the bride elect, but at the present time the definite date for only | one of them has been set. Next Wed- nesday evening, Mrs. Campbell is giv- ing a bridge at the Shurtleff home. Ge Mrs. Eloise W. Wortley, assistant director of Community House, is making a short visit at the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Mac- Kenzie, Camp Wipigaki, Lac du Flam- beau, Wisconsin. Later in August, she will go St. Joseph, Missouri, to see her mother and sister. Sal Mrs. A. Denis, Jr., of 1044 Tower road, spent last week-end at the home of her mother, Mrs. E. I. Mahan and John of Wilmette avenue, left this week to ride in the horse shows that are to be held in Springfield, Milwaukee, Indianapolis and Louisville, the latter one being one of the largest in the country. Mrs. Mahan will enter two horses, Glittering Glory and Golden Cloud, both well known in the riding world. Mrs. Mahan took first prize in the pair class at the Hinsdale show and second ribbon in the "Ladies'" class. Glittering Glory won the second and third ribbons in the three gaited class at the South Shore show. 50 Miss Georgia McClellan of 1716 Ridge avenue, Evanston, will enter- tain the north shore alumnae and friends of the National Kindergarten and Elementary college on Monday afternoon, August 11, for their regu- lar weekly gathering. Miss McClellan formerly of the college faculty, now lives in Lexington, Kentucky, but spends her summers in Evanston. ---- Mrs. Gerald H. Beard, of 796 Center street, has returned from a trip to several New England points. She visited her former home in Bridge- port, Connecticut, and spent a few days at her summer cottage in Lisbon, New Hampshire. ME ar Rev.
