WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 9, 1924 EE PROGRESS MADE IN SKEETER WAR Village Provides 'War Im- plements' at Cost The anti-mosquito campaign in the village is progressing satisfactorily and.the workers in the house-to-house canvass are achieving encouraging resilts, according to the accompany- ing statement issued late this week by the Village Mosquito Campaign committee. In the statement the committee also calls attention to a meeting of commit- tee members, captains and lieutenants in the campaign, which is to be held at the Village hall Tuesday evening, August 12, at 8 o'clock. The committee report reads: "During the past ten days Dr. Harry W. Moore, chairman of the Mosquito Campaign committee, and Herbert L. Woolhiser, village manager, have made a survey of the village to locate the particularly bad mosquito-breed- ing spots, and the village manager is notifying householders of the bad breeding spots on their property, re- questing them to rectify conditions immediately. The committee and vil- lage authorities will be glad to co- operate in all such cases to rid the spots in question of mosquitoes and eliminate the breeding places. "Oil and repellant, sawdust treated with oil and repellant, and sprayers may be purchased at the Village hall for the use of householders at a mini- mum figure. In this connection, ap- preciation is to be expressed to the Chicago and North Western railroad, whose purchasing power is being used in acquiring the material for use in our village. "It will be of interest to note that all ditches in and adjacent to the Skokie have been oiled and the weeds adjacent to ditches cut. "Mr. Woolhiser has been appointed secretary and treasurer of the Mos- quito Campaign committee. He will handle all funds and will give reports of the financial condition at stated intervals. "As has been published heretofore, BEACH CARNIVAL CALLS SWIMMERS No one but Prof. Cox, the official weather forecaster, can possibly in- terfere with Winnetka's third annual Water carnival scheduled for this Sunday afternoon at the municipal bathing beach. If it please Mr. Cox, the famous TomRobinson, Northwestern's nation- lly known swimming coach, will start the proceedings promptly at 3 o'clock. He is the official starter and an- nouncer for the day. The carnival will present events in pleasing variety, including short races. distance swims to determine the cham- pionship of Winnetka, tub, umbrella duck and canoe races, fancy diving exhibitions and push-ball contests, and a relay race to determine the cham- pionship of the north shore. There will also be an exhibition canoe tilt- ing contest. The events, as outlined in the official program, will be as follows: the village is divided into zones which are in charge of captains, who have block lieutenants. The captains and block lieutenants are calling on the householders in their assigned zones and giving instructions in connection with the location and treatment of mosquito-breeding spots. The com- mittee is greatly encouraged by the favorable reports made by some of the captains. Special mention is to be given to J. King Wooten, captain of the Spruce street territory. He and his lieutenants have completely can- vassed Spruce street from the railroad tracks to the Skokie and are vigorous- ly supervising and carrying on the actual cutting of weeds, spraying of oil, etc., for the elimination of the mosquito. "Notice is hereby given to the mem- bers of the committee, captains and lieutenants of a meeting to be held at the Village hall Tuesday night, August 12. Their presence is urgently requested.
