Mrs. Frances Schwarz. 30LTN47-1te |BoOK REVIEWS "OUR SENTRY GO" Jeannette Grace Watson has record- ed in book form under the title, "Our Sentry Go," "the story of.the world as we have known it in France 'during the years of war; heard it from the lowly and the great; heard it from people of many lands; heard it in a little house near to the heart of it all." Mrs. Watson is the wife of Dr. Samuel Newell Watson, who was rec- tor of the St. Elisabeth's Episcopal church of Glencoe for a number of years, who celebrated the fortieth an- niversary of his ordination to the min- istry on June 15 last, and who was for several years rector of the American church in Paris. While with the Am- erican church in Paris Dr. Watson was made chairman of the executive board of the ambulance committee which gave relief to the sick and wounded. While in this position, Mrs. Watson jotted down notes and receiv- ed letters from European royalty and prominent Americans which she here compiles. These make interesting reading if one is bent on viewing the early conditions of the world's war from a different angle. Here and there in the book is found narration of the hardships and cruel- ties attendant upon war conditions, but it is not of the blood curdling type that was so common in most of the books concerned with the war. Mrs. Watson softens her tragic events with feminine touches. Here she re- lates the sordidness of the home of the royalty, then she follows it with a description of the gown so-and-so wore. The effect produced by this method holds the reader to the book longer than the average war book of such a nature. The style employed by Mrs. Watson is just a little different than that of the average book. The insertion of letters she received and wrote, from and to well-known people in Europe and America, attracts attention. Her frequent use of the diary form relieves the perusal of the more explanatory chapters. A number of orders and commands issued by the Kaiser in German and French are reprinted with English translations. These help make the volume cosmopolitan. All in all, "Our Sentry Go" is the sort of book one likes to possess if he is interested in a brief and interesting account of the work of Americans dur- ing the early days of the war in bring- ing relief to the wounded, sick and hungry. One comes in contact with men and women whose names filled the press during and after the war for their activities in bringing aid to the needy--it is a compressed record or synopsis of the work they accomp- lished. If one is acquainted with Dr. and Mrs. Watson, this book is a de- sirable keepsake, as they have left the north shore for California. The book was published by Ralph Fletcher Sey- mour, Chicago. --Jac Tulman Senator Cummins Pays Visit to North Shore Senator Albert B. Cummins, of Towa, who is president of the United States Senate, visited his brother, Ben- jamin F. Cummins, of 286 Ridge ave- nue, Winnetka, while attending the official notification this week of Charles G. Dawes, candidate for Vice- President of the United States. Senator Cummins motored to Win- netka from his home in Iowa early last week. He attended a private din- ner with Mr. Dawes, Sunday, at which a personal conference was held be- tween the Towa senator and the Re- publican vice presidential nominee. On Tuesday noon Senator Cummins dined with the Republican national committee. He attended the notifi- cation ceremonies with his brother and ing; old pianos made new. ©L. W. : . Foster. Tel.
