1 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1924 PURPLE FACES GRID PROBLEM Only Eight Letter Men Back This Season Fight letter men from last year's varsity squad will form the nucleus around which Coach Glenn Thistleth- waite will build the Northwestern university grid machine this fall. With last season's squad thus depleted through graduation the Purple grid mentor will have a difficult job lined out for him at the opening of the 1924 season on September 15. Large gaps appear in the backfield and the forward wall which must be filled with fresh material from last year's yearling squad. Coach Thistleth- waite will look for much of his varsity timber this season from the lads who graced the freshman squad one year ago. From the sophomore candidates the Purple board of strat- egy will seek for suitable successors to Billy McElwain, half; Ole Mag- nuson, guard; Taylor, end; and Hor- ton, tackle. With the return of Captain Bob Wienecke, formerly of New Trier, at full and Bob Graham at half, Coach Thistlethwaite will have two reliables around which to build the backfield. Ralph Baker, Al White, and Ade Schumacker are likely material from last season's frosh squad for a back- field berth. Several second-string men from last year's varsity will find opportunity to work into a regular backfield position. These men include : Bill Christman, quarter; Bill Martin, half; and Bill Johnson, half. If Fred DeStefano, bulky fullback, who per- formed in able style last season, is able to hurdle some scholastic re- quirements, he will be back in Purple regimentals this fall. d Six veteran linemen will be on hand at the opening of practice next week. These men together with some husky sophomores who will seek positions in the forward wall should be the makings of a likely formation in this department. Tim Lowry, hefty, rangy pivot man, will prove a mainstay in the Purple forward defense. Lowry performing for the first time in con- 'erence competition last season, played ge game every minute of every Pur- ie contest, In Wally Seidel, Roy Bouscher and Red" Herman, Coach Thistlethwaite aas a trio of ends of whom much is expected. Kleighe, Bovik and Iein- ert, sophomores, will crowd these reg- ulars for positions. Some trouble in locating a pair of tackles and guards is anticipated. Barney Mathews is the only regular guard who will be back for a job in the line. He is a dependable man and certain to get plenty of opportunity to work this fall. Among the sopho- mores who will aspire for guard and tackle posts are: Parsons, tackle: Bruce, tackle; Johnson, tackle: Ford. guard and Cohen, guard.
