f { | WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1924 'AMACHOOR' IS RELIC OF PAST North Shore Players Follow Modern Idea "It's a far cry from the days of old 'amatchoor' shows to the present up- to-date productions as given by the North Shore's leading dramatic organ- izations," according to M. Hawley Mertz, veteran north shore actor, who is to be fea- tured in the North Shore Players' produc- tion of "The Wren," 'soon to be presented in this vicinity. "An example of such an up-to- date organization js the" North M. Hawley Mertz Shore Players, founder several years ago by a group of talented amateur actors. Not only has this organization proved to be a success, but it has also earned for its com- munity the reputation of doing the alert and interesting things in dra- matics. The North Shore Players be- lieve that it is a good thing for com- muities to enter into serious dramatic work," continued the youthful thes- pian. "In using this phrase 'serious dra- matic work," Sidney M. Spiegel, Jr., president of the North Shore Players, says: : "We do not mean by it that we have only sombre, blank-verse trag- edies in mind nor the usual run of tearful 'legitimate drameys.' Not at all. We do mean that we are going about our work seriously and care- fully." "As Mr. Spiegel points out, this ap- plies to the choosing of the plays as well as the casting. Our professional director, Mr. Weil, usually looks for the following qualities in selecting an amateur cast--I1, intelligence; 2, a good strong speaking voice; 3, willing- ness to work,-- and, as Mr. Weil, puts it, 'the greatest of these is-- willing- ness to work! Intelligent Work Important "It is the habit now in professional theaters to cast by type. Likewise with the North Shore Players. How- ever, careful intelligent work is likely to be more important than the mere fact that the actor looks, speaks, and moves like the character depicted in the play chosen. "In other matters, too, the North Shore Players in their work follow closely the practices of the professional stage. The director chosen is strictly and essentially a professional director. "The staging of all the North Shore Players' Productions is under the care- ful supervision of expert managers, artists, electricians, and property peo- ple. In fact, the whole staging and management of these amateur produc- tions closely parallels. the professional style. And why not? Isn't a Little Theater or amateur organization such as the North Shore Players really the field the professional stage draws from? Indeed it is. "The amateur actor has come into his own. He is recognized, sought after, sponsored by his communities and clubs, and he is ever under the watch- ful eye of the professional producers. Would Have Own Theater "Many amateur organizations older than the North Shore Players own their own theaters. This, of course, is our ultimate goal. Right now we use professional directors, engage our shows seasons ahead, and are putting shows en the road. Our own com- munity play-house is the next ambi- tious move. This is just a part of the work going on in a field rich with pos- sibilities. We have received a large stock of rebuilt machines. S oh Ny £6 N ~~ WW AN Not cold enough to start the furnace yet too chilly for comfort without heat yee RE you one of the home owners that A has said to himself, "As soon as Qil Burners are perfected I'll have one installed." And then being fairly busy doing your reg- ular stint every dav, put the question aside as one of the things you were going to really look into--and here it is Fall again. You know mighty well that you would like to be rid of the eternal bother of stok- ing a furnace with its dust and ashes. The cleaning of flues, the banking of the fire at night, the cold house in the morning, the complete impossibility of maintain- ing an even temperature, and really solve the problem of that 30 minutes heat you need mornings and evenings the first chill days this Fall. The idea of setting the thermostat, then forgetting about ali heating problems for the next eight months intrigues your imagination, but just how are you going about sorting cut the claims and counter claims wrapped up in their technical ver- biage? Where can you turn for an accurate standard of value so far as Oil Burners are concerned' Burning oil is not a new science. Qil Burners have been in use in industrial plants, battle ships, etc., for years. Engineers who have made a study of oil burning and who are authorities on the subject, have all agreed on certain definite fundamental principles which must be followed in order to burn oil efficiently. vyVve The first of these are: 1. Oil must be atomized or broken up mechanically and mixed with the right proportion of air to obtain proper combustion. (Do not con- fuse terms. Vaporizing or heating oils, or attempts to gasify by hot plates or other artificial means is not atomizing cr breaking up me- chanically.) 2. The second principle. Oil must be burned in the presence of a refrac- tory object which will throw the heat back in the ¢ombustion cham- ber. Fire brick has been found to be the most satisfactory refractory material. 3. In addition to atomizing the oil and burning it in the presence of a re- fractory material, the oil must be burned while suspended in the air, before it comes in contact with any cooling surface. 4. A certain fixed minimum quantity of air must be thrown into the com- bustion chamber. yee Does this all sound rather technical? We hope not. You and several other thou- sand home owners have a right to expect that the Oil Burner you install in your home relieves you of every heating trou. ble, that it functions automatically, that it requires no technical knowledge on your part to operate, that it maintains an even temperature in your home whether the thermometer outside registers 60° or zero. Your part must be, and properly so, limited to setting your thermostat at the desired temperature, and order oil at the proper intervals. The Hart Oil Burner Co. honestly and with scientific accuracy has met every fundamental requirement of the perfect oil burner within the limits of human fallability. We are amply financed and back of this is 35 years successful manufacturing ex- perience. Cur guarantee to heat your home satisfactorily means exactly what it says. The Hart Oi! Burner consumes Fuel Oil, first because it is the most economical and because it contains more heat units per gallon, it operates just as perfectly with the lighter and higher priced distillates. You know right well that some day you are going to have your home properly heated. Dust and ashes are causing a more rapid depreciation in your home than it should have. Isn't it worth your while to stop this over-depreciation NOW and have this and the rest of your winters spent in comfort? It at least costs you nothing nor places you under any obligation to investigate. NORTH SHORE BRANCH AYRES-TEFRA CO. 556 Center St. Winnetka, Ill.
